Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiny Macias.
Hi Destiny, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Ever since I could remember, I’ve always been surrounded by creativity. Instead of doing sports as a kid, my dad set up a drum set and guitars in the garage and let me and my sister play for hours. Then as music became a really vital part in my creativity, I discovered painting. I used art as a way to escape, and process. I started with sketching, drawing, painting and then found that others started to enjoy what I was making too. After graduating high school I knew I had to build a strong foundation in my artistry and did anything and everything I could to work as an artist. I’ve done everything from body painting, tattoo designs, had my first art gala showing at 18, then I started to fall in love with mixing my passion for fashion with art. As someone who always enjoyed creating new things, if I didn’t have an item of clothing or piece that I liked, I would just make it myself. This turned into creating custom hand painted jackets and pieces. I had sold over 20 personalized jackets in less than a year, 1 being in a raffle for over 1,000 people. This little beginning for me birthed Occurrere. A brand I started right in the pandemic, I didn’t know what it was going to look like, but I knew I had to do it. Occurrere means what comes to mind in my Latin origin, I wanted to create a name that could express what comes to creative brain and what it could possibly become. The brand will definitely be used for so much more to come, I’d like to use it as an outlet for any creative to express their process, just like mine, because you never know what you can create until you do.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
If you’ve ever been an entrepreneur in some degree, you know it’s not a smooth road, but still worth it all. Occurrere was in the works for a year before 2020, and then the pandemic hit. Which didn’t stop me but gave me some challenges to overcome. Being a creative, you are always in touch with every part of you, the spiritual, mental, and emotional side. So in every process, it brings out something that results in creating because you just can’t help it. Everything made, always has its own overcoming story behind it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’d say I specialize in art, and creating nothing into something. No matter the material, tools, or form. I’ve used music, art, and fashion to express my creativity, and have met and worked with a lot of talented people. I think I’m most proud of the work I put out that came from challenge, and not conforming to any limitations even if there were. I had always been commissioned to make custom art for others, but what made myself the most proud is seeing what I was able to create without even knowing the A-Z list of things someone wanted to already have. For example, I’ve sold a purse that was made from repurposing old leather scraps and turned it into an entirely different bag, I didn’t know what it was going to be saving scraps of leather and some chain, but it turned out to be one of my personal favorite pieces.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I’m always looking to meet, and collaborate with any artists in any different elements! One way you can support is following along with me and sharing the things I create so others can have art in their life’s as well too. I want to make and sell not only just well created art, but spread the message that you can create no matter what it looks likes, but seeing that process through, and giving life to creativity again.
My Instagram is where I post most of my processes, and results are always on my website!
