Today we’d like to introduce you to Devon Hunt.
Hi Devon, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Brix’n Mortar are three hard-working friends who have been in the Boston music scene for years. Brix’s core aesthetics are rooted in Oi! With a healthy heaping of all our favorite influences from our previous bands (Troy – Razors in the Night, Joey Riot – McGunks, Devon – Sexcrement).
The first full release was 2019’s Poison Words, followed by a handful of singles and a live Quarantined Sessions release. The new record, Something Ain’t Right (WTF Records), was recorded between legendary Boston Studio: New Alliance with Kyle Paradis & Wild Arctic Studios in New Hampshire with Dean Baltulonis. It keeps the roots in Oi!, at the same time, opens up the sound to incorporate a larger variety of influences, taking directions into Metal, Hardcore, and even 80’s new wave.
We released a music video/short film for “Hail the Wolf” (Something Ain’t Right). It premiered as part of Salem’s Haunted Happenings to a packed theater this past October. It will be making the film festival circuit before we release it.
We just returned from an international tour starting in San Diego, then to Hawaii & Japan! We have plans for a European tour next year, along with some regional runs with label mates.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Firstly, if we didn’t have passion, we wouldn’t do this to begin with. “Struggle” is an integral ingredient for rock n roll; therefore, it actually paves the road for us. Whether we are handling an equipment malfunction in a foreign country or organizing video shoots with a million moving parts, we are continually overcoming challenges which then bleed into our music.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am definitely known for being the biggest Bon Jovi fan on earth. In order to afford to continue to create, I am a realtor/property manager. I am actually in a real estate collective called Heavy Realty run by Juliet Lalouel, which is made up of musicians and folks in the music business. I also score and act in films with my friends (Monster Makeup). Check out “Deathdrop Gorgeous” which I helped score and “Saint Drogo” where I play the monster; what a dream that was!
We’d love to hear about what you think about risk-taking.
The only way to overcome any fears is to show your brain that it isn’t scary. The only way to do that is to take risks and realize your own power. I am a huge fan of risk-taking!
