Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Lee.
Diana, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always been a reader, so I guess the next step to writer was predictable. I’ve written throughout my professional life in academia and public health, but it took me a while to try my hand at fiction. At first, they were stories to entertain my daughters, and then they turned into stories I wanted to tell, mostly about family, belonging, and purpose, often cloaked in a mystery. Genre fiction has always been a vehicle for exploring our society and humanity in general, and I get tremendous satisfaction from researching and writing my novels. While I recognize the disadvantage of starting my career as a novelist in middle age, one big plus is the ease and comfort I have in not chasing someone else’s (or popular) demands. I write what I want, and it makes me happy.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Certainly, there have been obstacles and challenges in my life, but when it comes to writing, I have been very fortunate to have a supportive family and close network of talented writer friends (who are also quite good at giving honest feedback). For me, a big challenge is to never be entirely satisfied with where I am as a writer. I love reading authors I admire and gaining inspiration from their virtuosity.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve written and published three novels (The Green Crossing, The Breaking Room, and The Glowering Woman). Although I’m not crazy about the categorization of what is called “women’s fiction” (Why isn’t it just fiction? Fiction featuring men is mostly called literature -is there a men’s fiction genre? It’s annoying.), my first two books do focus largely on the personal journeys of women. The latest, The Glowering Woman, is my first straight up mystery set in Victorian-era London. I’m proud of all of my novels.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck is huge in my life (both good and bad). Honestly, I think luck is just another word for life. Stuff comes at us that is out of our control. It’s how we handle it that makes the difference. And even that is based on whether we are lucky enough to be strong and healthy or have a family/support/kindness of strangers/etc.).
