Conversations with Diana Thale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Thale.

Hi Diana, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been writing songs for as long as I can remember. I have notebooks on notebooks filled cover to cover that take over a large corner in my childhood bedroom. I grew up watching my older brother play drums and guitar in different bands, at different venues all over San Diego. By the end of high school I recorded my first few demos at Pacific Beat Recording in Pacific Beach.

I went to college to study Psychology and Criminal Justice in lower Manhattan. I was going through a criminal minds phase and my parents thought it was a good idea to study something practical. But I was in New York, arguably the most impractical, theatrical place you can get! I brought my guitar and psychoanalyzed my experiences and kept writing. I went to open mic after open mic, got every oddly located Breaking Sounds show, the 4 subway transfers and a 20 minute walk away kind of gigs. I didn’t fully understand what I was doing at the time, My only experience up until then were the musical theater shows i was in growing up. I still dont have any idea what I’m doing but since then I’ve worked in multiple recording studios including the iconic Electric Lady Studios founded by Jimi Hendrix, I’ve moved to LA to attend a mentorship in songwriting hosted by producer duo, Stargate (Sam Smith, Rihanna, Coldplay) and A&R legend Chris Anokute (Katy Perry), and I’ve moved to Nashville to pursue this full-time.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course not. My biggest challenge has been the imposter syndrome. I’ve always struggled to believe that I’m good enough. It’s one thing to say that this is the path you want to go down, its another thing to commit and execute. Its performing show after show, in empty room after empty room, writing bad song after slightly less bad song until you get better, and you never know when that is. It’s letting yourself grow and learn on a social platform with an internet full of feedback. It’s creating something and being brave enough to let the world judge you based on it, because you can’t get better unless they do. It’s asking strangers to care about the most vulnerable parts of you. Thats a terrifying thing to ask of people.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Im an artist/songwriter. I specialize in pop/folk/r&b but I’ve written songs for so many other genres. I like to think I’m know for my lyrics being satisfying to listen to, the way they roll off the tongue, and the internal rhymes.

I’m most proud of the music I’ve been putting out recently. It’s different than anything I’ve made. The last two releases have been “Losing My Voice” and “Your City”. Its catchy, witty, a sprinkle of attitude, and there is more coming soon! You can listen to them on all streaming platforms.

I’d say the thing that sets me apart from others is how I use my voice. I use background vocals for everything. I turn them into percussion and put them in more places than I probably should until it ends up working. I can’t mix my voice so when I sing higher I do a little yodel and it gets me to where I need to be. I change the way I sing to match the vibe of the song but also the specific words I’m singing.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Every memory with my dad.
