Conversations with Dustin Nickerson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dustin Nickerson.

Hi Dustin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started at an open mic in at Mad House Comedy Club at Horton Plaza (RIP!) 14 years ago. I did 3 minutes for 5 people. 2 of the 5 people laughed twice. Open Mic laughs are like baseball stats, so that was actually a pretty good night at the plate!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Ha! I am currently writing this in Home2Suites in Fargo, ND and have slept in 9 different beds in the last 12 nights. One of which was my own bed. Smooth? No. Gratifying and fulfilling? Often. Better than a day job? Every day that I don’t have a boss!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a stand up comedian, author, and podcaster. I talk mostly about family and relationships because it’s my whole world. My wife and I have a podcast called Don’t Make Me Come Back There that we record every Tuesday in our studio above Public Square Coffee in downtown La Mesa. I think what seperates me is a I do bunch of fun really cool things like going on television, have lots of viral clips, sold out shows and rubbing shoulders with famous people but what I ACTUALLY do the most is take my kids to and from school and activities. We always have one foot on the red carpet and one foot in the school pick up line.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I am not talented enough to not work hard so unfortunately, it’s my work ethic. Would have been so much easier to be born with God given talent…
