Conversations with Ellen Manilova

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ellen Manilova.

Hi Ellen, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey as a photographer began in Ukraine, where I built my own family photography business from the ground up and ran it successfully for over 8 years. I’ve always been passionate about capturing real emotions — the deep, honest connections between people, especially within families.

When the war began in Ukraine, my family and I had to leave everything behind and start over in a completely new place. We came to the United States with nothing but our experience, creativity, and a strong will to rebuild. It was a difficult transition, but photography once again became my anchor — my way of connecting with people, telling stories, and healing.

Today I live and work in sunny California, continuing to do what I love most: preserving life’s fleeting moments through storytelling and emotion. My work focuses on family, children, and those beautiful in-between moments that often hold the most meaning. I believe every family has a unique story, and I feel honored to help them tell it in a way that’s heartfelt and unforgettable.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Leaving Ukraine because of the war was heartbreaking, and starting over in a new country — with a different language, no community, and no stability — was incredibly challenging.

I had to rebuild not just my business, but my whole life, in a place where no one knew me. I struggled with language barriers, self-doubt, and the pressure of making everything work from scratch. At times it felt overwhelming, but I never stopped believing in the power of connection and creativity.

Photography helped me find my voice again. Little by little, I started meeting people, building relationships, and finding clients who connected with my work. Every family I photographed reminded me why I love what I do — and gave me the strength to keep going.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a family photographer with a deep love for real, emotional storytelling. My work is all about connection — the way a child leans into their parent, the laughter between siblings, the quiet moments that often go unnoticed but mean everything. I specialize in capturing candid, natural, and heartfelt moments that reflect the unique bond within every family.

What sets my work apart is my approach: I don’t try to force kids into poses or perfection. I want children to feel completely themselves — because that’s what I want to capture: who they truly are at this exact moment in their life. Every age, every little habit, every silly expression matters.

Before each session, I try to learn a little about the child — their personality, what makes them laugh, what they love — so that when we meet, I can become their friend. I believe that when a child feels safe and happy, it naturally sets the tone for the whole family. And when families are relaxed and connected, the magic just happens — sometimes they even run into the ocean fully clothed, just because it feels fun and free. And I love that.

What I’m always looking to capture in my photos is love, laughter, tenderness, care, admiration, and all the little details that tell a family’s unique story.

For me, photography is not just about creating beautiful images — it’s about creating an experience that feels joyful, authentic, and unforgettable.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I’ve learned that working closely with people — especially children and families — requires not only technical skill but also emotional awareness and balance. For me, meditation has been a wonderful tool to stay grounded and recharge after deep emotional exchanges during photo sessions. It helps me stay fully present for each family I work with.

I also love reading books on child psychology. Understanding how kids think and feel helps me connect with them more naturally during sessions and create a safe, playful space where they can be themselves.

And whenever I can, I take part in creative workshops — whether it’s photography-related or something completely different. These experiences keep me inspired and remind me how important it is to stay curious, open, and connected to my creative energy.
