Conversations with Emily & Ryan Burhop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily & Ryan Burhop.

Hi Emily & Ryan , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We are a husband and wife wedding photography team located out of San Diego, CA. Although we travel wherever the story takes us. Emry Photography was born out of love, love for one another and the love for serving people on one of the most sacred days of their lives. We joined forces as husband and wife and business partners in 2015. The name Emry comes from the fusion of both our first names, Emily (the Em of Emry) and Ryan (the Ry of Emry). We really wanted to build our business upon love because it’s the thread that ties us and our couples together. In a social media dominated the world that tends to “post pretty” and show the highlights rather than the full story we strive to break the mold by telling the authentic story of our couples wedding day. We always say we want to give our couples the photos they didn’t know they wanted. For us, it’s first all about having a servant’s heart for our couples. We know that when we have our hearts in the right place, the true storytelling naturally unfolds. Before Emry, we were both in totally different professional spheres. Ryan was a photography & business marketing major, and Emily was a biological science major. Our careers had left us unfilled and wanting more, and after photographing our first wedding together, we realized this is truly what makes our hearts pitter patter. We really pour everything we have into Emry Photography. Now in 2025, we have had the blessing of photographing hundreds of couples stories together. Our photographic style leans towards documentary style. We want our couples to look back on our photos and have them relive a moment. For us, this is the only way to create something that truly stands the test of time. We are always aiming to give our couples something worthy of their first family heirloom that will be preserved and cherished by future generations, to us the real moments are just that.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We have been blessed beyond what we could’ve ever imagined when embarking on this journey of business ownership. Since the origin of Emry Photography we have been consistently booked out photographing stories of the kindest souls. Of course, there are always struggles owning your own business. We have to “wear a lot of hats” as they say and it’s always a balancing act, especially as parents of two littles. Although we put in more hours than a typical full time job the nature of the business allows us to be more flexible with when we are editing and doing administrative tasks. It has allowed us to be there for school performances, sports milestones etc. we feel so fortunate to have this flexibility as parents.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We document one of the most sacred days of peoples lives, their wedding day. Everything from the big moments down to the smallest details are captured with our cameras. For us, it’s all about the storytelling aspect because we want to tell the real story behind our couples wedding day we never limit event coverage. That’s something unique to us in an industry that typically caps coverage. We always say “How can we tell your story if we are leaving mid-cake cut?”. For us, getting a paid ticket of admission to an event typically reserved only for the couples loved ones is something that still takes us aback. Keeping in mind that these people are trusting us enough to allow us in on their raw, unguarded moments, moments that will with time become part of their legacy is kind of a heavy thing, and we feel trust like that deserves wedding photographers who give it their all.

We pride ourselves in not just telling the couples story but also the story of their guests. The wedding day is usually the only day our couples will have all of their loved ones in one room. We reject a rigid shot list only focused on the couple and really strive to capture all of the side stories of the day. We love when after delivering a gallery the couples says “I can’t believe you caught that moment.” We are most proud of the experience we give to our couples. We have hundreds of 5 star reviews online and yes, people talk about how much they love their photos but also so much of what they say is how we made them feel, how the day went with us by their side and to us-that’s everything.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
They can contact us on our website, instagram, facebook, and the knot. A follow on our instagram or facebook is always welcomed and we truly appreciate all of the interaction and support we receive there.
