Conversations with Emma Gonzalez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Gonzalez.

Hi Emma, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I got into photography a little over three years ago and started shooting weddings very soon after. My now husband and boyfriend at the time, Caleb, had been a videographer and photographer for about four years already and helped me so much while I was learning. We started shooting a couple weddings together, with me as the photographer and him as the videographer. At first, I started my wedding business just as myself, but at the beginning of this year, we decided to merge our companies into Emma and Caleb Weddings. We also work for Ernie and Fiona Weddings. They have helped us grow so much in both our business and personal lives! Caleb and I got married in March, and since then we have shot about fifteen weddings together! It is so fun being able to work together. We both do our own thing as well; I am a full-time student, and he runs a marketing company. Having our wedding business together is so special because while we’re doing things on our own, we also get to build a business together. We both love being able to capture weddings. A couple’s photos and videos are the only things they get to keep forever, so that makes our job so special. We are honored to be a part of one of the best days of people’s lives, and we absolutely love getting to do it together!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Our journey in the wedding industry has been smooth for the most part, but we were definitely challenged during 2020 due to the pandemic. I had planned to go full-time with wedding photography up until almost all weddings were canceled. This delayed me by almost a year, but I am so happy to now be doing photography full time. Going through that time was definitely challenging, but it helped both Caleb and I grow and become more creative with the types of shoots we do and the way we run our business. I am so happy that neither of us gave up, even when it seemed that the world might never go back to normal.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Our photography and videography is focused on weddings, elopements, couples, and engagements. We both absolutely love being a part of the most special day of someone’s life and getting to both capture the day and celebrate with the couple. We do not take lightly what we get to do. Every moment of a wedding day is so special and it is an honor to be able to capture all of those moments. We love being a part of a community with so many talented artists, but what sets us apart is the quality customer service that we give to our clients. We want to be there every step of the way, both in the preparation and on the wedding day. We want our couples to feel completely relaxed, knowing that we are going to capture their day exactly the way that they want. This is the experience we give our couples. We also want them to get a sneak peek into what we captured as soon as possible which is why we put together a teaser video during dinner for them to see on their actual wedding day. We also send out some of their photos within a couple days so that they can see a little of how we captured their day while they wait for the rest. We want our couples to not only love their photos and videos, but to feel so special leading up to their day, on their day, and after.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
We love taking risks! We are up for anything our couples want to do. If they want to take their engagement photos in an unconventional location, if they want to wear nontraditional outfits on their wedding day, or simply have a nontraditional wedding, we love it all. In the future, we would love to travel to any and all locations for couples photos, engagement photos, or an entire wedding or elopement. We want our couples to get the exact look they want, and if that means hiking up a mountain for two hours, then we would absolutely love it. On our wedding day, Caleb and I climbed up and down a muddy slope to get to an amazing spot for photos at our elopement location in Big Sur. It was absolutely worth it and we want to inspire couples to take the same risks to get the amazing photos that they will have for their whole lives!
