Today we’d like to introduce you to Ethan Eron.
Hi Ethan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
It was the depths of the great recession in the mid-2010s, everyone was fearful about finances and for many, the future seemed bleak. In an effort to generate some optimism, several family members and I challenged each other to cooking a whole week’s worth of meals on a budget. We wanted to get the total cost per meal as low as possible. Ridiculously low. We realized that we could take basic staples (pantry items, beans, leftover vegetables, even small quantities of humanely-raised meats, and combine them to make restaurant-quality meals for a fraction of the cost of eating out. We later branded our project as thefivedollarfoodie.com and also published a cookbook containing our recipes on Amazon as “The Five Dollar Foodie Cookbook: Cook Better, Spend Less, Enjoy More Recipes.”
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
We developed our own software application, which uses a bit of artificial intelligence and machine learning to keep the recipe prices up to date on our website. This is part of the “secret sauce” of our family business — it looks at the recipe ingredients, quantities used and determines how much each recipe costs per serving. It can be challenging to account for regional variations in food costs, so we do our best to come up with “worst case” cost figures for each recipe so our customers don’t end up with sticker shock once they’ve finished preparing one of our delicious recipes.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve always been passionate about food. After launching thefivedollarfoodie.com several years ago with my sister and mom, I decided to explore my passion for food more deeply by completing chef training at Cordon Bleu in Paris. I also took on several catering jobs and appeared on local television with my sister to perform cooking demonstrations. I can’t think of anything I enjoy more than cooking for others and sharing many of our family recipes with the world.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
