Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Olbricht
Hi Evan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey into photography began in middle school as someone who was passionate about the beach and wanted to capture amazing moments. As a middle school kid growing up in Orange County, I was captivated by the powerful surf photography I’d see online. I had a GoPro so I started jumping in waves and trying to capture every moment I could.
After around a year or so of using my GoPro and posting on social media, I upgraded to a Canon 70d with an Aquatech water housing, which marked a pivotal moment in my journey as a photographer. This really opened me up to very high-quality photography and also made me more invested as I spent a good amount of money on this new camera. Going into high school, I still surfed and did a bunch of surf photography at the beach, but I was pretty busy with school, work, and sports, so I didn’t spend as much time as I would have liked.
But, everything changed when I got to college at PLNU. I met a bunch of surfers and got involved with the surf team and am currently one of the photographers for the team now and it has been amazing to work with such talented surfers.
Currently, I try to go out whenever the weather and waves are good and still have a strong passion for taking better photos every session. I strive to capture bold images that tell an amazing story and captivate the audience. Recently I started my company, EvanOPhotography, and have been working with surfers and brands around San Diego and having an amazing time. I am a senior marketing major so I can’t wait to see where I can take EvanOPhotography and what we will be able to accomplish.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Surf Photography has definitely not been a smooth road. Last year, my surf photography housing flooded, and I thought I lost my main camera and best lens. Luckily, they weren’t fully gone, but I still had to get them both fixed and my housing on a college budget. I also am still in college, so the time aspect is really tough. I have to run my own business while having a part-time job and being a full-time student. This means sometimes getting up at 5 am, staying up late to get editing done, or going out and shooting when the lighting is right. It also means sacrificing other time with friends.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a surf photographer in San Diego. I specialize in water surf photography, which means I’m actually in the water swimming around with my camera. I am most known for my unique perspective, shooting in the water, and the stories I am able to create with my work. I am a very unique photographer and have a special look with bold photos and try to test the limits of what I am able to do. I also recently just got a drone and have been able to get some amazing shots from high above the water, which has been fun to mess around with. I think all of that is what sets me apart from others because I don’t know a lot of work that looks like mine because I am always trying to take unique photos. I also have a marketing background, so when clients come to me, I have a creative vision but also that marketing background to help these clients with the work I give them. I have been able to take brands to the next level because of my strong creative visuals and experience. I also started a YouTube channel where I help other photographers build their own businesses based on my experience, and I have had great results from that.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the beach. I grew up in Orange County by the beach and that is why I came here. I try to get in the water as much as possible and am very passionate about that. The thing I like least about San Diego is the prices haha. As a college student trying to find a place to live after college and it is crazy how much rent is.
