Today we’d like to introduce you to Genesis Valencia.
Hi Genesis, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I always had a feeling since I was young that I wanted to be in the beauty industry. When I graduated high school, I promised my parents that I would at least try to go to college to see if it was for me, but with the condition of getting to work as a makeup artist on the side. I did makeup for about 2 years. I had always wanted to do something a little bit more creative, and I realized college wasn’t right for me when I failed out of math three times. After the third time, I decided to drop out and go to beauty school because I just felt right. It was a weird time because I felt like makeup artistry just wasn’t for me anymore, so I wanted to explore the world of aesthetics and see what it could bring for me. When I was in beauty school, I remember waxing my eyebrow and just falling in love and realizing that I wanted to do eyebrows for the rest of my life. After that moment, I knew what I had to do, and I wanted to do and that’s exactly what I did. After school, I started working at a salon, and it just wasn’t the best experience. After a year, I ended up leaving and almost quit being an aesthetician, but I made the decision to keep going. I reached out to one of my friends who owned us Salmon, and she was happy to take me in. She gave me the freedom to grow my business in her environment, and I am very grateful for that. After a few years of that, I was ready to move on to my next venture, which was leaving my hometown. I decided to leave my hometown and move to San Diego. I’ve loved it here ever since I moved, and I’ve had such a wonderful time. I’ve been able to grow such a beautiful business in the last two years, and I am happy and proud to see what the future holds.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road was never really that smooth when I was going to college and in beauty school. I had two other jobs, so I was juggling working in the morning shifts at Starbucks and afternoon shifts at Ulta so I could try to make it through school. I really didn’t have a day off at all. On the days that I wasn’t working, I would go to school for 10 hours a day, three times a week, trying to finish it so I could start my business. Growing up as a first generation in the United States was a little bit hard for me because my parents didn’t really have a lot to help me out, so it was pretty much all on me. I did the best I can and I’m so glad that I made it. During my experience at my first salon, I was working for someone who didn’t want to see me win, and that was really discouraging and hard for me because my assumption was always that if you’re a salon owner, you would want your employees to succeed because that makes you successful. It was a very discouraging experience which really made me want to quit, but I knew that I wanted to have my own business and the freedom to do what I wanted really bad. That’s what gave me the motivation to keep going. Another struggle was leaving my hometown to move to San Diego. It was a very emotional road. I had always wanted to leave, but I knew the road was not gonna be easy. When I arrived, I was so nervous and so scared. I had no idea what was going to happen; thankfully, I felt like I had some practice with already building a business one time, which really helped out the second time around.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a professional brow artist. I have been working in the industry for eight years. I started really young. I specialize in brow waxing and brow mapping, brow lamination, and brow tinting. I also offer lash lifting as a service. I spent some time exploring the aesthetician world to see what I would like to do the most, but I never straight away from eyebrows because it was what I loved since the very beginning. Nowadays. I am known for my brow mapping videos on Instagram, which is super cool to be on a platform like that. I think what truly stands out from others is my work ethic and the way that I care for my clients. I want everybody who comes into my shop to know that it is a team effort between me and them and that they actually matter and aren’t just another transaction. I love making people feel happy and making them feel beautiful. It’s very fulfilling for me.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I would say something surprising that most people don’t know about me is that I’m actually very soft and emotional.
