Conversations with Guillermo Malfavon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Guillermo Malfavon.

Hi Guillermo, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story started in 2012 at San Diego State University. I went straight to SDSU from high school as an engineer major but did not know what I wanted to do exactly. As I took my general courses, I realized that engineering was not going to be my future. I started to gravitate towards science and more specifically towards Kinesiology. After taking some courses in Kinesiology, I realized I was more interested in the “behind the scenes” aspect to physical activity, which pushed me towards nutrition. I started taking nutrition courses and started applying the science I was learning in myself, as I struggled with being very skinny and being very self-conscious about it. I started seeing my body change towards the direction I wanted it to, and I was hooked. It made such a big change in my life that I wanted to help others reach the same feeling of confidence and health with what you eat vs medicine. I started working at Scripps as a food server while I finished my school.

Once I graduated with a Bachelors in Food and Nutrition in 2016, I started moving positions at Scripps to diet clerk and later a Dietetic Technician. I got a lot of great clinical experience in the 3 years I was there, but wanted to expand my knowledge and reach, therefore my next step was working in a community clinic at Family Health Centers of San Diego. I also did another 3 years there and I loved helping low-income families, as I came from a low-income household myself. Being there, gave me the courage to keep reaching more people therefore, with the support of my wife, I decided to start Gains by Guillermo in February 2021.

This is my way of reaching more people and coaching people to understand the science of food and how it can help us prevent almost every disease out there. It was such a success right from the start that I was able to go full time with my business in May 2021. Here, 7 months later, I am happier than ever doing what I love doing and learning A LOT more in order to keep growing my reach and keep helping as many people as I can.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I can confidently say that it has been much smoother than I expected so far. If anything, I feel like I am still struggling with growing my business to the scale that I want it to. I understand that it is still early, but I have a very go-getter personality and I do not stop working until I am satisfied. I was never really a very big social media person but having this business has made me step out of my comfort zone with that and have been putting out much more content out there. I try to put good information but due to the nature of social media, I also try to put some fun videos to showcase my personality as well. This is also my first stab at a business venture; therefore it has been quite the learning journey and I still have much to learn!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in helping people reach their health and fitness goals. I work with all ages and all levels of health. From people suffering with diseases to healthy people trying to reach a certain physical look. I am proud that I can help a wide variety of people with my expertise and individualize all plans to each specific person. I do not give anything generic to nobody.

Everybody that I have worked with, has different schedules, different goals, different foods, different stress levels, etc. therefore I cannot possibly have people on the same plan without taking their current life into consideration. What sets me apart is that I do not just give you a diet and leave it up to you. I am actively coaching you through the whole process. The meal plan is always changing depending on what is working and what isn’t working. Depending on your body’s results, the plan can change as well. What is most important that sets me apart, is that I leave people with knowing how to KEEP their results! Most people can lose the weight but almost all of them will gain it back. Not with me. We make sure that we are making changes that you can sustain long term.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I come from a low-income background. I started my early school years in Tijuana. Started school in the U.S. at 4th grade. I was constantly moving schools, which made me a very shy person. My parents divorced in my teenage years, which made me become the protector of my family. All my early life events made me grow up fast and mature much faster.

I have always been more of a serious personality. I was pretty good in school, especially in math. The school system wanted to jump me forward a year because of my math skills, but due to my limited knowledge of English at the time, my mom decided to keep me with kids my age. I really liked sports and video games as well. I did soccer, basketball and football in high school but never pursued them as I had to start working to help pay bills.
