Conversations with Isaac Agundez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Isaac Agundez.

Hi Isaac, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I come from a family of musicians, so a lot was expected from me. When I was a child, during worship at church, I would clap off beat. I also wanted to mention that I had chronic sinus and a murmur in my heart. My parents were concerned because it seemed like I wasn’t musically inclined. My father is an amazing guitarist, and he would make us sing in harmonies with my siblings. I was forced to learn an instrument, tried the guitar like my dad, the guitar and I have a love/hate relationship. I wanted to try accordion because of norteño music, we couldn’t afford one. Once I joined high school, my parents enrolled me into marching band, so I could learn how to play the saxophone like my grandfather. Once I played the saxophone for the first time, my life changed forever. I gave up my dream of becoming a lawyer, so I could be a full time musician. I come from a low income family, so I didn’t have transportation nor money to buy my own instrument, I would stay late at school so I could practice 4 hours daily. My dad bought my first saxophone during my senior year in high school. During this time I discovered that I have perfect pitch.

Music has opened so many doors in my life, from getting an education, to being able to play in 18 different countries around the world. I had the blessing to study with saxophone genius Eric Marienthal after I met him at a Yellowjackets concert. I believe my life is a miracle, being able to play the saxophone after having chronic sinus and a heart murmur, there is definitely a powerful being who had this planned for me. Now I teach at EJE Academies Charter School, and I also teach Music Clinics around Latin America. If you work hard, dreams are possible.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say in the beginning, finances were always an issue. Not having your own instrument, struggling with transportation, riding the bus, taking a long time getting from one place to another.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a saxophonist, play in different events, I also record and go on tour with different bands.

During the day, I also teach music at a Middle School.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I plan on making more music, going on tour, and record.
