Today we’d like to introduce you to Ivan Uriarte.
Hi Ivan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
This photography journey began when I was little when I grabbed my parents’ disposable cameras and started to take some photos, and although they were terrible and out of focus, I found some joy in having a camera in my hands. As I got older, probably 10 years old, I was the unofficial family photographer and videographer at weddings. In my teen years, I started to take more photos with a digital point-and-shoot camera, and it wasn’t until I was 17 that I got my first DSLR camera. From there, I started doing mainly music photography at local concerts, live performances, and portraits, then I did some street photography. As I grew older, I started traveling and hiking which gave me the opportunity to shoot some of the prettiest landscapes I have seen making me fall in love with landscape photography. Now, all my travels are based on what remote place I want to hike to photograph.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road; I think every photographer or any artist always faces a challenge. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has felt this way, but at one point, I felt my photos weren’t good enough, at one point, I didn’t want to publish anything. It wasn’t until I realized the big mistake I was making by comparing myself to others so I started analyzing what could I do to improve my photographs until I found my style. Now that I have found my style, I can start working on other small details; the goal is to always improve.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in landscape photography; I classified myself as an outdoor adventurer photographer. I go out on hikes or any other travel adventure, and I photograph the landscape or the outdoor lifestyle. Now with Instagram reels being a big part of social media, I’ve been starting to document more in video, trying to document the adventure/lifestyle traveler in hopes that it will inspire others to go out there and explore. There are lots of things that I’m proud of, from going on a five-day 44-mile hike to photograph the Peruvian Andes to making a 15-second reel about my hobbies that inspired a bunch of people to go out there and start living life. I don’t know what sets me apart from others; I think everyone has their own style, and I’m following mine.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson is just to keep doing what you like, what you find joy in it. Photography has led me to visit different countries and areas where not everyone goes; if it wasn’t because I kept photography in my life, I probably wouldn’t be so much into traveling like I’m now.
