Conversations with JAMES LANDERS

Today we’d like to introduce you to JAMES LANDERS.

Hi JAMES, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
From a single 3D printer humming quietly in a Tierrasanta living room to a thriving creative hub with a bustling Etsy storefront, I have built Full Moon Imaginations 3D Printing into a local sensation. What began as a passion project among the laid-back hills of California has now grown into a full-fledged small business. My team and I craft unique, custom 3D printed pieces that have found fans not just on Etsy, but across various social media platforms and local events.

From day one, I have been all about blending creativity with community, turning a simple corner of Tierrasanta into a launchpad for something truly special. And now, with a dedicated office space and a growing catalog of one-of-a-kind designs, and I’m just getting started.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road definitely hasn’t been smooth. When I first started in my Tierrasanta living room with one small printer, I had no idea how much trial and error came with 3D printing. I dealt with constant failed prints, learning new software, material issues, and trying to balance the creative side with running the business side. There were nights where I’d stay up until 2 or 3 a.m. just trying to figure out why a model wouldn’t slice correctly or why a print failed halfway through.

Another challenge was visibility. It’s one thing to make cool pieces, but getting them in front of people, building an audience, managing social media, and earning that first wave of trust on Etsy took time and patience. There were slow months, moments of doubt, and days where it felt like progress was barely moving.

But every obstacle forced me to get better. I learned new techniques, upgraded equipment, built a small dedicated workspace, and slowly grew a community of customers who appreciate the work I put into each piece. Those struggles are honestly what shaped the business into what it is today.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in creating unique, custom 3D-printed pieces that blend creativity with precision. What started as a simple passion project in my Tierrasanta living room has evolved into a small but vibrant studio where I bring imaginative ideas to life — everything from collectible art pieces to holiday ornaments to custom designs for customers who want something truly one-of-a-kind.

I think what I’ve become known for is the uniqueness of my shop. I don’t just print files; I focus heavily on design, detail, finish quality, and making sure every item feels special. I take pride in treating each piece like its own little project, not a mass-produced item. Whether it’s adding my own creative touches, refining models, or experimenting with textures and colors, I love delivering prints that make people say, “I’ve never seen one like that before.”

But the biggest thing that sets me apart is the combination of quality and customer service. I’m hands-on with every order, always willing to customize, communicate, and make sure people feel taken care of. I truly love when customers send photos of my work in their homes, on their Christmas trees, or as gifts they gave to someone they care about. That’s the part of the job I’m most proud of — knowing something I created brought joy to someone else.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
People can work with me in a few different ways. I’m always open to collaborations, whether that’s creating custom 3D-printed pieces for other artists, businesses, event organizers, or anyone who has a creative idea they want to bring to life. I love when someone comes to me with a concept and we figure out together how to turn it into something tangible.

Supporting my work can be as simple as visiting my Etsy shop, sharing my creations on social media, or recommending my prints to friends and family. Every bit of that support helps small creators like me grow.

I’m also open to partnering with local makers, small businesses, and community events here in Tierrasanta. Whether it’s custom merch, themed pieces, or unique décor for special occasions, I enjoy being part of projects that bring creativity into the community.

At the end of the day, my favorite part of this work is connecting with people. If someone has an idea, a collaboration, or even just wants something custom for their home or a gift, I’m always happy to talk and create something memorable together.
