Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Khamphanh.
Jennifer, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I spent 10 years in the events industry, but over time, I realized I wasn’t feeling truly fulfilled in my work. I wanted more freedom to travel, cook, and host, all the things that bring me joy. In 2020, I discovered that content creation didn’t require a big investment, just creativity and consistency. So, I started posting recipe videos as a fun outlet.
In 2023, after leaving an unfulfilling role, I found myself struggling in the job market. That uncertainty pushed me to take content creation more seriously, not just as a passion, but as a way to pay my bills. What started as a hobby quickly turned into a career. Brands began reaching out, first for gifted collaborations, then for paid partnerships, and I realized I could make a living doing what I love.
My journey started in food, but over time, I’ve woven in other passions like camping and traveling, allowing my content to grow with me. Now, I specialize in creating innovative, story-driven ads that feel organic and engaging, showcasing products in a way that resonates with real people.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Leaving a stable job was scary, and struggling in the job market pushed me to take content creation more seriously, but that came with its own challenges. Despite my years of experience in events, every door in that industry seemed to close on me. I went months without landing a single interview, and my mental health took a hit.
At the same time, content creation, something I started just for fun, began opening new doors. Slowly, I was getting more brands in my inbox, and began turning my passion into a career. Looking back, it feels like the universe was guiding me in a new direction, even when I couldn’t see it at the time.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I create user-generated content for brands, specializing in the outdoorsy camping and travel space. My content is all about inspiring people to embrace their free will—getting outside, being extra, and enjoying nature with the finer things in life. Whether it’s a gourmet meal cooked on the beach or an elaborate cocktail by the fire, I love showing that the effort is part of the fun.
What sets me apart is my ability to tell a story through my ads. I seamlessly incorporate products into my videos in a way that feels natural and engaging rather than overly salesy. I’m proud of how my content not only showcases brands but also encourages people to slow down, be intentional, and make the most of their time outdoors.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Honestly, some of my biggest mentors have been TikTok creators I’ve never personally met. There are so many free resources on the internet that can help you learn and grow. When I started, I found sample portfolios, contracts, and other tools online. I would screenshot a few examples and then merge what I liked from each to create my own version. It was all about learning as I went and using the resources available to me.
As for networking, I’d recommend starting with your friends. Even if they’re in different fields, everyone is connected to someone, and you never know who can help you. Be open and honest with your friends too. When I was making my career change and struggling, every friend I talked to about it found ways to connect me with people who were looking for UGC content or social media help. Sometimes the best connections come from unexpected places.
