Conversations with Johanna Lee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Johanna Lee

Hi Johanna, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Since childhood, I’ve always been the “sensitive” one, so I don’t think it’s a coincidence that I ended up as a mental health therapist. When I became a mom in November of 2023, I had already been working in the mental health field for about 5 years. Becoming a mother awakened a whole new level of passion to support new parents. I realized that the current systems in place do not adequately support parents, often starting as early as pregnancy & postpartum. Because I was not ready to return to work full time after my (short!) maternity leave & was still processing my own matrescence (process of becoming a mother), I decided to start my private practice, specifically focusing on supporting new moms in postpartum & early motherhood. Working with this population, I realized the importance of community- not only for the moms, but also for myself and the work I was pursuing. I decided to start the online community “Village Collective” to host therapeutic community events & spaces to share resources, connect, ground, and support each other in the seasons of perinatal work & new parenting. As a part of my “MillennialTheraMom” instagram and youtube page, I also create educational videos & content that are meant to increase access to education and resources that could benefit a new parent’s mental health. I truly enjoy creating accessible spaces and content for new parents, entrepreneurs & providers and hope that people can feel supported when they access my content.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey has been bumpy but I feel like I am learning A LOT in the process- not only about how to run a small business, but also how to create balance so that I can show up as the mom I want to be. I’ve had to work through some narratives around “productivity, “rest” and “worth” and it is something I encourage every new parent and provider to process for themselves. I am learning to prioritize and budget enough time for tasks such as marketing, networking, and content creation that are realistic for my schedule as a mostly-stay-at-home mom too. I am also learning how to include me-time in the schedule so that I can be healthy and stay off the road to burnout.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a postpartum mental health therapist & I host an online community for new parents and perinatal/reproductive providers called the Village Collective. The mission is to create accessible therapeutic community events & spaces to share resources, connect, ground, and support each other in these seasons. Within this “Village,” I share resources relevant to each of these populations, share videos from my postpartum mental health educational youtube page (millennialtheramom), host monthly events & workshops & create accessible content for wellness. The events are virtual so that anyone can access this support from the comfort of their home. I feel like my values of authenticity, accessibility and humor set me apart. I am proud that I am creating the types of spaces I know that I would (and do!) benefit from both as a new parent and entrepreneur. I hope that we are able to create and maintain relationships within this community space.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Some of the other people who deserve credit are my husband for always believing in my vision, my daughter for instilling this passion in me with her birth, my family for being constant reminders of who I am at my roots, my community of friends and providers who have shown me the power of connection, the Momwell podcast host Erica Djossa, Indigemama from instagram who hosted a summit on Postpartum mental health that really inspired me, Kimberly Ann Johnson’s book “The 4th Trimester,” Lucy Jone’s book “Matrescence,” and so many more podcasts, authors and speakers.
