Conversations with John Galfano

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Galfano.

Hi John, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started 40 Over Fashion after I lost 35 lbs and nothing in my closet fit anymore. Because if you lose 10 lbs, things start to fit differently. But if you loose 35 lbs, nothing fits and you need a whole new closet. I couldn’t find many decent resources for guys my age (43 at the time) that explained what age-appropriate attire was. I didn’t want to dress like my grandpa, and I’m also not a kid anymore and I certainly don’t want to dress like one. I wanted to look polished, but not stuffy and I wanted my clothes to fit me better.

I feel that most guys want to dress better but they don’t know how, so they fail to participate and wind up wearing the same items they wore in college. Unfortunately, this doesn’t necessarily represent who he is today.

The clothes men wore 20 years ago told the story of 20 years ago…. Not of present day. I’m pretty sure a lot has happened and changed in those 20 years since college, and you might not even be the same person. You’ve matured, you may have a family, you have a career and your goals and outlooks on life have changed. Maybe you find yourself single after a 15-year relationship and you want to put your best foot forward and make a great first impression.

I started a blog writing about menswear that absolutely nobody read… but I kept writing. It eventually started attracting attention and grew. The funny story is, I started making YouTube videos as a way to drive traffic to my website. But my videos were such a hit that most of my attention these days is with content creation on YouTube.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Specifically speaking about YouTube, it’s a pretty tough road. It was just like starting all over with my blog…. nobody watched. However, the more that people started watching, the more comments I was reading, both good and bad. Nothing can prepare you for negative comments. It’s easy to say; “Just ignore them”, but it still gets to you because the attacks aren’t just about the piece of content I made, these guys get personal. My mentality is to either sink or swim… those are the only two options, and I chose to swim.

YouTube is a interesting platform because yes, I do make most of my living from it, but if the algorithm decides it doesn’t like me, views drop off and revenue tanks. It doesn’t matter that I’m working harder than ever because if views are down, my bottom line is affected.

And don’t get me wrong because I’m not complaining (first world problems), but the struggle is real. I post 2-3 videos per week and these are hard deadlines. Most of these deadlines are from brand partnerships that have paid me to create content on a specific date. There’s no calling in sick because every 2 days, I have a deadline to meet. It’s stressful at times and it can be extremely taxing on my overall creativity.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Basically, I create visual and written content that revolves around the men’s lifestyle and self-improvement space. My main audience, and my target demographic are men between the ages of 35-64. Think about it…. clothing manufacturers, for example, make and market clothes to a youthful demographic. Nobody seems to be talking to the 45-year-old dude. It’s like they’re invisible. That’s where I come in. When I started my blog back in 2014, nobody was talking directly to men in their 40’s.

I specialize in helping men to look better, feel better and to have more confidence through the clothing they wear, how they see the world, and how they treat other people. My main purpose is to motivate and spread positivity because at some point in our life, we realize that we’ve lived more time than what we have left. So the question is… what are you gonna do with the time you have left?

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love that San Diego is full of youthful energy! I think older people should engage with and spend more time with younger people because it helps us to feel vibrancy and energy that might be missing. The weather of course is ideal, and the food options are endless. I think the least enjoyable thing might be the traffic.
