Conversations with Jonathan Mayorga

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Mayorga.

Hi Jonathan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Officialmayorga started back when I was in college, Cal Poly Pomona. I was part of the Apparel Merchandise program and started attending different clubs in school. Fashion Society was a club that hosted the annual fashion show so I started participating and making small collections showcasing my clothes. After starting my career in corporate jobs around Los Angeles, I stopped making clothes and collections or anything related to my brand. I partly grew up in Tijuana and I started to get the urge to move back home and start bringing my ideas back to reality. Pandemic era hit and I was forced to move back home. I had the privilege to start working on myself stakes and projects, and our monis bags were born. My first commercial product for officialmayorga.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Never a smooth road, or else it would just be super boring. For us a huge struggle is being based in a border city. It’s a huge privilege to be able to have both experiences and have bases in many other cities. But legality and customs is such a bumpy road. A huge learning curve for us. Learning about legal business, administration and other business topics are still huge struggle for us. Nonetheless, we are very open and willing to keep sharing and learning with others about our business experience, especially here in Tijuana.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Currently at Officialmayorga, I work as the Production Manager and Social Media/Creative Director for the brand. My favorite thing to do is design clothing, create photoshoot ideas, and collaborate with others to build new images. I’m definitely most proud of our extension to our eCommerce site, having our monis bags in brick-and-mortar spaces is crazy! Officialmayorga has a fresh view on trends and fashion, I believe our experience of living in Tijuana and moving around other cities like San Diego and LA gives us a very unique perspective on what we want in fashion.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Not really into reading or listening to podcasts, music is a huge inspiration for me on the daily. Finding new music, new artists is such a hobby of mine. Some artists I’m really into at the moment are Arca, Los Shapis, Bad Gyal, and Sega Bodega.
