Today we’d like to introduce you to Julian Jolliffe
Hi Julian, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hello there!
I am Julian Jolliffe – A fine art landscape, cityscape, nightscape, and architectural photographer based in Riverside, California. I have been photographing the natural and urban landscape of Southern California and surrounding areas for the past couple of decades, while offering personal instruction and mentorship to the local photography community for much of that time.
My award-winning images have been featured in PSA recognized S4C international salons and catalogs, at the prestigious photography exhibitions of the San Diego, Los Angeles, and Riverside County fairs, and have been featured and sold in Riverside’s iconic Mission Inn, as well as other galleries and displays throughout the southern California area. I have been published in various media outlets such as the Press-Enterprise and The Riversider Magazine, where I have been a staff photographer for the past few years.
I am very passionate about the craft, always striving to find and photograph new, unique, and iconic compositions from some of the best vantage points – leading to one of a kind, high-quality images.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Overall, it has been a reasonably smooth road for me so far. Can’t complain!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Professionally, I photograph a wide variety of subjects for The Riversider Magazine, and primarily landscape photography for my website, www.julianjolliffe.com. From current events to historic homes, local architecture and the surrounding landscape, I often find myself switching hats between photojournalist, architectural photographer, and landscape photographer. It is very rewarding work that always keeps me on my toes creatively.
My personal work is comprised of mostly landscape and cityscape photography, and expands outside the limits of the city of Riverside to wherever my creative passion and camera take me throughout Southern California and beyond. I often photograph in San Diego county, as it is such a beautiful and diverse area photographically. From the mountains to the coast and everywhere in between, there is always something interesting and unique to photograph in San Diego.
The work that I am probably most known for would be the use of extreme focal lengths to create my images. I absolutely love working at both ends of the spectrum; from capturing every little detail of the inside of a small sea cave at 11mm, to photographing moonrises over multiple compressed layers of a vast landscape at 600mm.
What am I most proud of? So many things come to mind, but I’d have to say that photographing my community for The Riversider Magazine would be right at the top of the list. Serving as a judge for the prestigious San Diego County fair international exhibition of photography is definitely at the top of that list as well.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success, in my opinion, is relative. Accomplishing a life goal, however large or small, is a huge success in and of itself. Anybody can be successful in whatever they pursue, as long as they set realistic goals, and eliminate distractions that inhibit the pursuit of them.
