Conversations with Julian Perry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julian Perry.

Hi Julian, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hello there! My name is Julian and I’m a photographer out here in San Diego California. I first got into photography when I was around 12 years old. My family in Japan let me use an old Nikon D series and I fell in love from there. I started off, like many people, shooting landscape and my then definition of street photography. Nowadays I shoot both film and digital; though, only shooting film when it comes to my hobby photography. Looking through my current work you’ll find that I love focusing on compositions and different elements of photography. Most of my work is based on here in San Diego and Japan.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I haven’t really faced too many struggles throughout my photography career. I separate digital photography for my commercial work and film for my hobby work. To add on to that, I don’t pursue photography as a career at all. I’m lucky enough to work in the film & television industry which is a creative field yet different from photography. I find that photography for me is a philosophy rather than being just a hobby.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in film photography. I take pride in the creative process of shooting film. I’m a bit of a nerd so I love the chemical process of developing film and printing as well. You can typically find me shooting portraits or documentary style photography. I think I have a unique eye when it comes to compositions and the will power to take the photo some people are afraid of.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Patience for sure. There is no need to rush success; nor is success a linear process. I take time to digest and understand my own work before I ever release it out to the world.
