Conversations with Ka’imi Kuoha

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Ka’imi Kuoha.

Ka’imi Kuoha

Ka’imi, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My passion for martial arts and performance runs in the family and sparked my journey into stunt and fight choreography. Growing up on movie sets, I joined the Screen Actors Guild at age 2 and shared my first speaking role with George Clooney. Inspired by my father’s action movies, I began training in various martial arts as soon as I could walk. This led to a deep fascination with stunt work and fight choreography. I trained rigorously in martial arts, gymnastics, and stunts, gaining experience in designing and executing dynamic fight sequences for film and stage. Over the years, I’ve worked on diverse projects, from the Screen Actors Guild Awards to major Hollywood productions with Netflix. Today, I’m grateful to dedicate myself fully to my passion. Whether choreographing a fight scene or performing stunts, I’m constantly inspired by the challenge and excitement of my work. I eagerly anticipate the next chapter of this journey and the projects it will bring.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Has it been a smooth road? Absolutely not. Like any journey worth taking, mine has been filled with its fair share of challenges and obstacles.

One of the biggest struggles I faced early on was breaking into the industry as a female. It wasn’t uncommon for me to walk onto set and see surprised expressions when I stepped forward as the “fight guy.” Despite my family background in entertainment, I had to prove myself just like everyone else. I had to work twice as hard to earn my place and gain recognition for my skills and talent.

Another challenge was dealing with the physical demands of stunt work. It’s a grueling profession that requires immense strength, agility, and endurance. This means prioritizing fitness and nutrition to ensure I perform at my best. I’ve faced injuries, setbacks, and moments of doubt along the way, but I’ve learned to push through adversity and keep moving forward.

But through it all, I’ve remained resilient and determined. I’ve learned to embrace setbacks as opportunities for growth and to stay focused on my goals, no matter how daunting they may seem. And with each challenge I’ve overcome, I’ve emerged stronger, more experienced, and more passionate than ever before.

I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in stunt work and fight choreography, primarily focusing on creating engaging action sequences for various mediums like film and stage.

What people tend to appreciate about my work is my adaptability and attention to detail. Whether I’m performing stunts, choreographing fights, or planning intricate action scenes, I strive to maintain a sense of authenticity and realism, ensuring that the audience is fully immersed in the experience.

But what truly fuels my pride is the opportunity to impart my knowledge and expertise to others. I thrive on teaching my students and performers the practicality of self-defense movements, empowering them with skills that extend beyond the screen or stage.

One aspect of my life that brings me immense joy and pride is watching my 17-year-old daughter find her creativity. She’s discovered a passion for movement, incorporating it into her daily routine in inspiring ways. Seeing her embrace her creativity and express herself through movement fills me with pride and reminds me of the importance of nurturing individuality and self-expression.

As for my growth, I’m constantly challenging myself to innovate and improve. Whether it’s mastering new techniques or exploring creative ways to enhance my craft, I’m always seeking opportunities to learn and grow.

I believe my background in martial arts, coupled with years of experience in stunt work and teaching, gives me a unique perspective in the industry. But at the end of the day, I’m just grateful for the opportunity to do what I love and share it with others.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Despite my deep love for jazz and blues and my admiration for iconic singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Etta James, most people don’t know that I’m a singer. Even though I’m extremely nervous about performing in front of others, I have a passion for music that’s hard to deny.

Before my daughter was born, I spent four years as part of a jazz band, immersing myself in the music I adore. As a recent highlight, I had the incredible opportunity to perform at Birdland in NYC.

Singing has been a cherished part of my life, a way to express myself and connect with others through the power of music.
