Today we’d like to introduce you to Kasey Nauton.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
First, I just want to say thank you for the opportunity to share my story with your readers. My journey into art and design started in an Anthropology 101 class. When I learned about early humans and how important the creation of tools, clothes, and artwork was to our development as a species I knew I wanted to be a part of that. Humans have the ability to see the world both as it is, and how it could be. We can create objects that communicate, that help us better understand ourselves and relate to others. We can reshape the world around us, and use that power to pry at the profound, terrifying, incredible nature of our existence.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
To tell the truth, I’ve hurt myself far more than any external obstacle could. My ego has no problem creating distractions and insecurities for me to deal with. There have been dark times where I felt I should never make art again. That the world would not care for anything I could ever create, so I should just give up. Those times make me grateful for inspiration, and now when I see something flash across my mind I reach out and grab it before it can escape. I try to find balance in my day to day, working gradually towards my goals while keeping an eye on my self destructive tendencies. The studio is my anchor. If I can just get myself to the studio and start to work, then I have a win for the day.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’ve been playing with some new technology, and planning out some long term projects. I recently got a 3D printer and a VR headset at the studio, and to me these two machines represent a new frontier. My goal is to be able to work in a virtual space and create forms that can be printed in real time. My current work is focused around a new symbol I developed for peace and prosperity, a green apple with stars carved into it. I want to form a company that converts artworks and products into goods for those in need, creating real value for humanity through a system that gives more than it takes. Art can be about so much more than aesthetics. I want to leave a real impact, something that can continue even after I’m gone.
What makes you happy?
Peace of mind, stillness, stability, and patience. I find happiness in becoming a better version of myself, settling into my power and confidently following my own path. I find happiness in hard work, in the excitement of a new idea or a completed project, and sometimes in stepping away and forgetting I have any work to do at all.
