Conversations with Katherine de Wit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine de Wit.

Katherine de Wit

Hi Katherine, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
When i was in my 20’s i knew i wanted to do something in the beauty industry to make people feel beautiful! I was in upper level management working in the restaurant industry in Scottsdale, Arizona at the time, and was so burnt out, so i decided to move to San Francisco to go to school for a year at Aveda! I spent a year studying up there and passed my boards for my esthetics license an then immediately decieded San Francisco wasn’t the place for me and moved down to San Diego! Before even moving, i rented a space at a local salon in Pacific Beach and started building my clientele. About 8 months in, i was fully booked and a while after that decided to open my own place! I opened Kat Eye Studios with the vision of giving local estheticians a place to have their own business INSIDE of my business with freedom to make their spaces their own. Kat Eye Studios is a local staple located at the base of Bay ho near Clairemont and central to most of San Diego! As i’ve progressed my personal business, i’ve added a couple services to my books including our our amazing new airbrush spray tans that are great for not just summer, but when you’re feeling like you need some color in the winter as well! I specialize in mainly Lash Extensions with eye shape correction and tailor the lashes to each individual with what best shapes their face and eye shape! I love making people feel beautiful on a daily basis and giving people a space to relax and enjoy a nice service as well.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s not always easy to have every room and space in the salon fully rented out. There have been some struggles along the way with that. I’m passionate about finding a community for the salon and renters that really care about their businesses. I love to be surrounded with people that market themselves and want to do everything they can to see their businesses thrive. I’ve been pushed down by previous “bosses” and landlords that told me it wasn’t worth it to open my own spot for their personal benefit and i’m so glad i didn’t listen, because look at me now!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In my opinion, it’s super hard to find a good lash artist these days. There is a lot that goes into including proper training, proper isolation, creativity, and safety procedures. I mainly specialize in eyelash extensions, with eye shape correction, Eye shape correction in eyelash extensions refers to the technique of customizing lash styles to enhance or balance the client’s natural eye shape. By strategically selecting and placing extensions of varying lengths, curls, and thicknesses, the goal is to create the illusion of more symmetrical, elongated, or lifted eyes, depending on the client’s desired outcome. This technique helps accentuate natural beauty while ensuring the extensions complement the unique contours of the eyes. I can do ANY style someone requests from the most natural lashes that enhance your natural beauty, to mega volume to give you all of the fluff you desire! I also specialize in air brush spray tans that give you a natural glow while covering body imperfections and give the illusion of a slimmer, more toned self. These spray tans are done all by hand ensuring that every inch of your body gets covered and you have an amazing tone and glow!

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
In California, i see a lot of people leaning toward a more natural option for eyelash extensions. As you get older, lashes can boost your confidence and make you feel beautiful and great waking up on a day to day basis. I see this industry always being strong and artists like myself taking precedence over the new robot lash machines they have due to the fact that we can be so much more creative as humans and ensure good work is being done!
