Conversations with Kathy Comer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Comer.

Hi Kathy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up around photography. My father was an award winning videographer and photographer here in San Diego. It was always in the background while I lived my life, had children and pursued less creative work. Years later, I started photography by using just my iPhone. I fell in love with taking photos of our beautiful San Diego beaches and landscapes.

When I finally got my first DSLR camera, it opened up a whole new world for me! Now I’m excited to follow in my father’s footsteps and pursue photography as a full time business. I currently sell my photos and my favorite subject is our beautiful San Diego sunsets. I do portrait and event photography as well. I can’t go wrong with all the beautiful areas in San Diego for my backdrops!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Starting up a photography business here in San Diego hasn’t been easy. It’s a saturated field and while I’m lucky to have so many talented photographers to work with and learn from, it was a challenge to set myself apart. I started by doing volunteer work at my church and gradually accumulated clients. Word of mouth has been the most valuable promotional tool that I have. Sharing my work on social media hasn’t hurt either.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in sunset beach photography and have a large following on Instagram. People love that I capture beautiful candid moments from their special day.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My father Ernie Schneider was a big inspiration to me. My children Amy and Mike have been my biggest cheerleaders. I’m most thankful to my first clients who took a chance on me when I was first starting out.
