Conversations with Kosthetic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kosthetic.

Hi Keven, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve loved anime and cartoons for as long as I can remember, however it wasn’t until 2012 that I started cosplaying. One random Saturday, my dad asked if I wanted to skip my driver’s Ed class and drive to Orlando for a comic convention a friend told him about. I said of course! Anything to get out of another boring driver’s Ed class! After we went to our first con, dressed in plain t-shirts and jeans, we knew we couldn’t go back without cosplaying. There was so much talent, so many cosplayers and costumes that left me so inspired. I had never cosplayed before and thought I may look “weird” going to the con dressed up as something. Now I can’t NOT do it! The next year I was ready with my first costume I made by hand, Korra from the legend of Korra, and the rest is history. I eventually got a sewing machine and taught myself everything I know. 10 years later, I still enjoy learning new skills and perfecting what I’ve learned!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been very up and down. Cosplaying is such an expensive hobby that at times it was hard for me to continue. I’m a perfectionist so I want to spend whatever I need on whatever materials I think would be the absolute best for my vision. Because of this, I’ve gone a few years taking a break, especially when I moved to college. But I always find myself crawling back. I can’t be stopped! Now I’ve started a Ko-if donation page and done other things like Patreon and Etsy to help fund my costume builds! Other obstacles I’ve faced have been myself! I always want to do better and better and sometimes feel poorly about my work and myself. I have to keep reminding myself to not compare my art to others that may be further along in their journey and rather use that for inspiration and motivation to keep going!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Currently, I’m trying to become an artist full-time! Along with costume making and cosplaying, I also do digital art, and I’m a musician. I studied mental health psychology in university, and even though I haven’t gone down the path to become a therapist I want to implement my passion for the importance of mental health through my art and help encourage people to be themselves and follow their passions!

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I originally studied classical music and wanted to perform in orchestras as my career!
