Conversations with King Zabb

Today we’d like to introduce you to King Zabb.

Hi King, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I discovered music through pro wrestling. As a kid, I would go to the local record store to buy wrestling entrance music compilation CDs which became my introduction to music. Through that, I ended up diving into that world and picked up playing guitar in my early teens. I started my first band in high school with some friends and continued to gig and tour as much as possible after graduating. Independent artists oftentimes learn new skills outside of their primary craft in order to keep production costs low so I picked up graphic design. Graphic design eventually lead me to videography. I started shooting live concerts and pro wrestling events to get my reps in before moving into my own music videos. Shooting music videos quickly became my full-time career and is probably what I’m currently most known for. I’ve recently used my network of creatives to start a livestream podcast where I have casual conversations with other artists in the entertainment industry.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The goal for me to make a living as an artist and entertainer has always been clear but the path was and is still often uncertain. Most people around me went to college but I dropped out to go all in on my passions. I always thought getting a degree to have a backup plan is just setting you up for failure. Backup plans fail too and if you’re going to fail at least lose the game you want to play. After dropping out, having to juggle a day job while working towards becoming a full-time creative at the time was difficult. There was lots of time spent working for little to no money in an effort to get my name out and recognized but I knew the struggle would be worth it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a full-time music video director and editor that specializes in underground hip hop and metal. A lot of people recognize my work from my post-editing and vfx style. A lot of the artists I work with have plenty of other resources but choose to come to me for my specific look which is a huge blessing. I’m afforded a lot of creative freedom through the trust of the people I work with.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was very quiet growing up. Music and pro wrestling were my main interests. I think it’s a combination of confidence and ignorance that lead me to actually pursue making a career out of my passions. A lot of people are too scared to follow their dreams. There isn’t a laid out path to becoming a full-time artist. Luckily it worked out.
