Conversations with Krista Marcheschi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krista Marcheschi

Krista, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Sonoma County, California, in a small, close-knit family. Growing up in such a beautiful and vibrant area gave me a strong appreciation for community and hard work. From the age of 14, I’ve been volunteering and working, driven by a desire to carve out my own path and find my place in the world.

I observed early on that hard work and determination can open doors that even the best college degrees can’t, and that success is about perseverance, personality, grit, and the drive to keep going when others stop so in 2004 I made the choice to skip College and dive right in to the workforce full time. From retail and selling luxury cars, to getting my first taste of the Hospitality Industry at a Michelin Rated venue, and then spearheading an events and marketing program for large HVAC Franchise, each job was a tiny stepping stone up on my path of life, leading me closer to finding what I was truly passionate for.

In 2015 I packed up my entire life in Northern California and moved to San Diego, embracing an exciting job offer and starting a new chapter in a city full of possibilities developing largescale Events all around the United States for a large San Diego Finance company. Never working in a true “Corporate” atmosphere in the past, Renovate America shaped me and guided me in the direction to which I would eventually settle in. In 2017 I received a phone call from a group of incredible people looking to build something MAVERICK, and since that day have had the opportunity of being the Events and Marketing Director for Mavericks Beach Club.

With the support of Mavericks owners Eric Lingenfelder, Mark Cirilo, and David Cohen, for the last 7 years I have had the privilege of helping build, grow, and shape Mavericks Beach Club to where it is today. Each step of my journey has been fueled by a passion for growth, resilience, and making the most of every opportunity.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like most people trying to find their place in the world, the road to where I am today has had its fair share of personal challenges and struggles, but it’s the bumps in my journey that helped shape me and give my personal story character!

When I was younger, my main obstacles were monetary. Learning how to live on basically nothing, paycheck to paycheck, scrouging change to fill my gas tank to get to work in the first place… it was all a vicious cycle. Being a girl in this world is hard enough, let alone a strong headed, loud, outspoken one! I lost jobs because of my blunt and (sometimes potentially intimidating) personality, but then in turn, later in life I also climbed corporate ladders because of it. This proved to me that there is a “lid for every pot” in life. Those opportunities weren’t right for me, and I for them…. and that’s ok!

Now as a mother, with a loud, outspoken, strongheaded daughter of my own, I find that what challenges me is how to balance a career and my professional world while in my personal world, being the best mother possible. I don’t want my goals to get in the way of raising a family to achieve theirs, but I also want to lead by example to show them anything is possible with hard work and dedication. I know this is just the beginning and a common struggle that is shared among parents. We do the best we can!

Life’s obstacles help us adapt and learn to overcome, and sometimes adversity is what you need to face in order to achieve your dreams. Every challenge in my life has made me the person who I am today and has helped guide me to the life I love.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am the Events and Marketing Director for Mavericks Beach Club and a current sitting Board Member for Discover Pacific Beach!

Discover Pacific Beach is a local foundation that seeks to promote, revitalize, and connect the Pacific Beach community with events, workshops and programs to help small our businesses! I have been an active member withing the organization since 2018 and am proud to now sit on the Board for this incredible team.

Mavericks is a 20,000 sqft indoor/outdoor multi-level dog-friendly Bar/Restaurant/Event Space in Pacific Beach. We can hold close to 1,000 guests normally and almost 2,000 guests when we permit out our attached Lot event space… needless to say, nothing we do is small! We host a wide variety of events throughout the year (both Public and Private), but what’s consistent is the over-the-top events we’re known for. We’re always looking for ways to help improve the community and support local charities through fun.

In addition to formulating, planning and executing all events at Mavericks, I also work closely to coordinate all of the print/marketing material and run all of the Social Media and Reputation Management (Yelps, Google reviews, whatnot) as well. If you follow us on Facebook or Instagram you will probably see my face or hear my voice regularly!

What sets us apart from others is the diversity of events we are able to host! Since opening our doors almost 7 years ago, we’ve been fortunate enough to host hundreds of events here ranging from yearly reoccurring events such as our over-the-top holiday celebrations (Memorial Day, St Patrick’s Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Halloween, etc!) to charitable events, private corporate events, holiday parties, brand launch parties and even weddings- the sky is the limit with the visions we can help bring to life here!

Charity and volunteering has always played a huge part in who I am, so I feel so lucky that over the years we’ve been able to raise over $300k from our events at Mavericks for various charitable causes!

Here are some noteworthy events we’ve been lucky enough to host:

Puppies and Golf Farmers Open Kickoff Party: Every year in January, we partner with Amanda Balionis of CBS Sports to help raise money for her incredible charity Puppies and Golf. Sponsors such as Heritage Links, Callaway, Farmers Insurance and a long list of others help us build a REAL putting golf course in our Lot in benefit of the charity and year after year (in addition to getting local shelter dogs adopted) are able to raise much needed money and awareness for the cause. This upcoming January 20th – 21st we’re lucky enough to host the 4th Annual!

Industry Beach Volleyball Tournament supporting Big Josh Foundation: Every September, we partner with Malibu Rum to bring in over 25 tons of sand and build two regulation Beach Volleyball Courts in our lot for charity! 15 teams representing bars all over SD competed in the tournament with 100% of the proceeds to benefit Big Josh Foundation!

Mustache Madness in support of FirefighterAid: Every year in October we’re lucky to host 500+ firefighters and their families as we help raise money to support FirefighterAid Cancer Prevention – this year we were lucky enough to use the monies raised to support 3 local Firefighters from CA TF-8 and their families after a tragic accident occurred while on the job.

Cinco De Mayhem Lucha Mania: We transformed Mavericks into a full Luchador Wrestle Mania complete with am actual wrestling ring, professional Luchadors, Mariachi performers and a Battle Royale. One of my favorite moments of this event was looking around and seeing all of our residential neighbors on their roofs with lawn chairs watching all of the action! Ringside seats, if you will!

Mavericks Winter Wonderland: Every year we transform Mavericks into a full Winter Wonderland complete with over 3 miles of lights, tinsel and in conjunction with the Santa Run and the PB Holiday Parade, we bring in over 20 tons of real snow to create a fun day for all ages!

Mavericks Halloween “Nightmare On Garnet” Party: Biggest Halloween party by the beach! We transform every corner of Mavericks into a Halloween extravaganza complete with a full haunted house, contortionists, creepy performers, and much more!

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
With the relevance of Social Media now days and the pressure that comes along with it to display perfection, I think it’s essential to embrace the IMPERFECTIONS that life throws your way. Use them to learn from, to build your own ideals, morals and plans.

Words of advice? First and foremost, prioritize your own health and wellbeing. Self care matters and if you do not take care of yourself, everything else will crumble. As for the business side:

– Sometimes in the business world you’re only as strong as your relationships so never burn bridges and network constantly. The connections I have cultivated from even 20+ years ago have turned into key pieces of my success and happiness.

– When you dive into a new job, regardless of your position always try to learn the business side. What makes the company tick, how it was started, and how you can make it 1% better each day. Regardless if you stay in the industry or not, this knowledge will carry with you and in most cases can be applied to whatever is next.

– Be flexible. Nothing comes quick or in the order you think it does so trust the process.

– Understand your audience and listen to your own creativity. There is no such thing as a “Dumb Idea”, just maybe the wrong audience.

Other than that?

Take risks. Believe in yourself. Trust in your support system. And most importantly, don’t let anyone tell you that you’re not good enough. Not strong enough. Not smart enough. Not cool enough. Not enough… You and you alone are in charge of writing your own story, and what a beautiful story it will be if you follow your heart and know that everything is going to work out in the end. When a door closes, a window always opens and you may find passion in something you never even knew existed.
