Conversations with Lancelot Dong

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lancelot Dong.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
That’s a long or short story depending on where you want to start. I was an IT Systems manager for 30+ years in Life Sciences. I retired in 2023. I have been involved with autos as a hobby since I was very young and established a blog and podcast after retiring; focusing on Alfa Romeo cars and the Alfa Romeo Owners Club and the owners.

I have been a lifelong photographer and enjoy making images of cars of all makes and models and talking with the owners or caretakers.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Primarily overcoming internal doubts. Figuring out how to start recording the podcast, what was going to be the focus and finding the courage to invite people to participate.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My professional career and what I do now are completely different. I started my professional IT career just teaching other people how to use a computer and providing services that clients needed but could not do on their own. I was then hired by a local biopharmaceutical company to manage their growing network, and provide assistance to employees. I moved through different aspects of IT in the Life Sciences and culminated in being a director of IT.
I am most proud of the work that the companies I worked for/with and the people with whom I worked or that worked for me. I helped provide guidance in areas where technology and regulatory statutes intersected. I also provided assistance in developing technical systems to assist in regulatory submissions that are required to bring a drug candidate to market successfully.
I believe that what had set me apart from others was my ability to understand technical issues and translate them into practical understanding and resolutions for employees and management.
Throughout my life I have been an avid photographer of landscape and autos. After retirement, I turned my attentions to shooting more photos of special cars and images of beautiful scenery.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I have been in San Diego since entering active duty in the Navy and have enjoyed all the normal things living in this area of the country, like the weather, the culture and the food.

I dislike the increasing cost of living due to political actions and the increasing amount of interference in every day living that those politicians bring.
