Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Gomez.
Hi Laura, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Since moving to America at five years old, my family and I created a life in New York. My parents being the greatest inspiration of resilience, perseverance, and loving-kindness. I grew up to be a curious, adventurous, and independent person. My passion in life as a kid was to help others, and as I grew up and followed my intuition, I narrowed that passion down to a dedication of healing myself and others through mind-body modalities. This field is still so new that I often offer a brief description.
Mind-Body Medicine is the study of whole-person health through integrative, alternative, and complementary healing practices. I practice healing through counseling, coaching and instructing yoga. In the past year, I put together community workshops and events. Between yoga classes, cannabis education, live music, and art gatherings, I am finding my way into each realm of whole-person healing. Having now lived in San Diego for three years, I am proud of what I’ve created so far and what more there is to be created in the future to come.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. I consider myself very blessed- kinda that “someone else has it worse” type of thing. Financial hardships, the struggles of immigrating and assimilating to America, severe mental health issues both in my family and friends through my entire life, and of course, moving across the country have all been challenges I have faced. Without getting into the “traumatics”, the experiences of loss and needing to rebuild yourself from the ground up in order to rediscover your desire to live have taught me loads of universal wisdom.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I dedicate myself to community health and wellness. Through years of dedicating my time to youth development and assistance, I have learned and experienced many things about mental and behavioral health. As a yoga instructor, I have been able to not only find the courage within myself but hold space for and guide the growth of others. I have experience working with various non-profits and am familiar with various underserved populations. I enjoy trying new roles from different perspectives of the health paradigms we have available to us. I am currently finishing my Masters in Mind-Body Medicine and a certificate program in Integrative health and wellness coaching.
How do you think about luck?
I believe that luck is synonymous to what some call karma because I have been extremely fortunate in my life, despite the extreme struggle I have experienced in other ways. I am abundant in love and support from family and community. I believe that my luck has come from the incredible people that my parents are. Sometimes I feel like they racked up all the good karma points, and I’m lucky enough to be swimming in their earnings; I don’t mean financial earnings, actually far from that.
My family is blessed with fully able bodies and minds, sure we have our physical, mental, and emotional hardships (who doesn’t), but we are filled with love, loyalty, and infinite support for each other. Because of this ball of good energy that surrounds my family, I believe that I have been able to manifest the life I wanted. I didn’t wish it into existence, and I sure did not do everything on my own- in fact, I couldn’t have done it alone- but I was able to make the choices that benefited me and lit up my soul’s path.
