Conversations with Laura Yelin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Yelin.

Hi Laura, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I am an abstract painter living in Carlsbad, CA. I was born in San Juan, Argentina. A city overlooking the snowed peaks of the Andes Mountains. I have traveled widely and lived on three continents, finally finding home in my painting studio. In 2016, I earned a Ph.D. in Neurobiology and spent years studying the genetics of sleep regulation before committing to my creative practice. It was only during my post-doctoral studies that I began painting and found the freedom I was looking for my own entire life. This work continues to inform my aesthetic—after decades spent searching for patterns in data and live scientific models, I bring an analytical understanding of randomness and order to the canvas.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Big changes in life require courage and determination and these processes never come easy. Letting go 22 years of a scientific career to start over in a completely different field brings many new challenges. I moved to SD 6 years ago as a postdoctoral student at the Salk Institute, I didn’t know many people or the art scene here at all, I had to build up from scratch an audience, get to know people in the art world and most importantly, I had to learn how to convey my art message and my inspiration in a way that is very different that the scientific industry. This path is not always smooth, I had to lift up myself and my confidence and keep moving forward even when I was rejected to join art shows or galleries. Staying true to myself, having faith in my art, and my internal drive that keeps me looking for new adventures, artistic tools, and… is what got me through this process. I love challenges, I think that when you hit rock bottom, you then get to your highest achievements.

Also, many days include a routine to keep connected to my higher self and that includes meditation, sports and constantly learning from high-performance coaches.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an abstract painter. Painting, for me, is freedom in action. It is a ritual and a window to my soul. I abstract elements of my past and present—my multicultural background, mindfulness practice, and scientific training—into shapes and colors on canvas. I hope my paintings communicate something healing and transformative to viewers, who bring their own experiences and backgrounds to bear on their understanding of my work. As an artist and scientist, I explore the dualities (or tensions) between fluidity and control, intuition and strict methodology, and subtleties and boldness. I layer together media of disparate textures and contrasting colors: Acrylics, texturing materials, resin, and mark-making tools are my predominant materials. I view my practice as an orchestration of hues, textures, and marks, which I blend into harmonious compositions.

Collectors and people that connect with my message are amazed of how art can touch deeply in your heart and soul. Is like understanding a language that is not written or spoken but can tell a whole story and get you in many different ways.

I love painting abstract because it gives me the freedom to express myself in the way I feel. A blank canvas is like starting a new book, where you get the chance to pour whatever you feel in this moment limitless and intuitively.

I invite everyone to visit my website www.laurayelinstudio.com to better appreciate my style. Also, follow me on Instagram to see the behind-the-scenes of my paintings! @laurayelin.studio

What do you think about happiness?
At a personal level what makes me happy is my family, I also love traveling and spending time in nature, and more specifically visiting places with pristine clear sea waters.

On the professional pan, the expectation before an art show and watching people stare at my artworks, connecting to my message, and being amazed by that.

I feel that my paintings aren’t finished until they find a forever home and it makes me infinitely happy every time that happens.
