Conversations with Leah Varney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Varney.

Hi Leah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I’ve always loved taking photographs, so it was only natural for me to crossover into photography as a hobby. I bought my first “real” camera in 2020 and simply fell in love with the art of photography immediately. The gratification I felt was unmeasurable. I couldn’t wait to post/share my photos, and it wasn’t long before the inquiries started. I have sold several images, booked maternity shoots as well as weddings, events, and family sessions… I operate by word of mouth primarily but am hoping to expand expediently in the next couple of years.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It most definitely has not been a smooth road! I have never been great with gadgets and technical instruments. I am still learning all the ins and outs of my equipment, and there has been a lot of frustration along the way… I am self-taught so that has meant many hours watching YouTube videos and/or making frantic phone calls to other photographers needing advice. In other ways though, it has been smooth in the sense that the referrals keep coming despite lack of heavy advertising or networking. I am very grateful to those who have given my name as it demonstrates their satisfaction with my work.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I think what sets me apart from other photographers at this point is I don’t actually have a specialty! I have absolutely loved every project that has been offered. I have done everything from professional/headshots to maternity, weddings, family sessions, events, and food photography. Each project presents a different and unique challenge, and I love navigating through those obstacles to produce the best results. I’m on a quest for knowledge, and taking on a variety of projects outside of my comfort zone is how I continue to grow. I am extremely flexible with my clients and try to ask as many questions as I can about the desired results so that the end goal is clear. I have felt pride at the completion of all projects because the reactions from my clients continues to give me the joy and motivation to keep pursuing my passion.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
There are tons of networking groups via social media/online that can connect like-minded individuals. I was intimidated by my camera at first, and it wasn’t until I connected with a fellow photographer that I was able to conquer my fear. After that, posting regularly on Instagram and word-of-mouth referrals have worked wonders for me.
