Conversations with Leah Varney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Varney.

Leah Varney

Leah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always loved pictures. From my earliest years, I was a ham in front of the camera. I never shied away from being in photographs and took the same amount of joy in capturing moments for others. At the beginning of 2020, I decided to make a small investment and buy a quality camera so I could take my photos to the next level. I struggled a bit with the mechanics at first, but once I became a little more comfortable, I hit the ground running and haven’t looked back. I just love capturing beautiful images whether that be just a scenic background or a beautiful moment at an event. Photography is not only my hobby, but is absolutely my passion and a part of who I am.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Anyone can look through a lens and snap a button, but there are so many technicalities that I was unaware of when I first started. I also had no idea how important lighting was and had many moments of struggle navigating that. I’ve never been the most technically savvy person, so one of my biggest hurdles has come with issues surrounding camera mechanics, editing roadblocks, and computer issues, just to name a few. However, I have been blessed with many opportunities due to word-of-mouth referrals so in that sense, my journey has been smooth. Any hurdle I’ve faced just helps me learn and grow and I’m grateful for all of my resources to help in those times of need.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’ve been told on many occasions that I have “the eye,” and that is not something that can be taught. I have a natural ability to frame photos artistically that are pleasing to the eye. I pride myself on not overshooting. I take my time and am very intentional with my shots. Additionally, due to my previous experience in front of the camera, I am able to easily coach and guide my clients into flattering poses that will best compliment them. I am very proud of my journey thus far as I am self-taught and have addressed all hurdles head-on and have become more knowledgeable and confident as a result.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
Word of mouth is my favorite way of being referred. It is truly the best compliment that I could ever receive. I also love working with other photographers so that we can help and learn from one other. I have always been interested in collaborating artistically with models/stylists, etc.
