Conversations with Maribel Herrera

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maribel Herrera.

Maribel Herrera

Maribel, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began my floral journey with being an art student. I had dreams of moving to New York and painting my life away in a cute studio. I needed a job to get to New York, so I began working in the flower department at a local grocery store. The rest was history. I began to fall in love with each stem, each color, each design, how they thrived in different temperatures, how some were more fragile than others, how some designs were more intricate than the other. I decided to take courses at the Southern California school of floral design to get formal training. I attended and came back with an even deeper passion and dare I say obsession. I began working for small flower shops, various event companies and kept building in my flower journey. I have mentored, trained and taught by so many amazing designers. I’m proud to say I have been in this industry for about 15 years and have been employed, freelanced and now own my own small business in the floral world.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In this creative industry there is a lot of judgement, criticism, and at times a competitive edge. It has not always been an easy road to convey concepts, ideas and dreams among peers. There was a time when I spent a long time comparing my work to others. I have found my flow and feel that I am true and authentic to my creative styles.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a floral designer. I help transcend emotions through floral art when words fall short. I make your floral dreams into a reality for your most special day. I help bring your vision to life. I boost your self esteem feeling lovely while wearing something created just for you. I help honor people’s lives and celebrate them. I create floral arrangements specializing in weddings, events and accessories. I also do sympathy work, celebrations of life and florals for life’s special moments. I teach workshops and show demonstrations on local news stations.
I am so proud of knowing that I am a part of helping make someone happy. That I help impart an emotion that not everyone gets to feel. That my creations are in pictures that hang on walls, sit on mantles, are in people’s homes and passed on from generation to generation.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters to me is creating florals that speaks and connects to individuals. That my clients are truly happy with the outcome. All the conversations, all the details, all the energy that is put into it matters to have a dream come true.
