Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariette Carrillo.
Hi Mariette, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My artistic journey began when I was 6 yrs. old, I joined a local art workshop called “Imagina” in Tijuana. Not only did I learn about art history and technique I had the creative freedom to express myself. I took many art courses in high school (intermediate/advanced) and at the Art Institute of San Diego which really pushed me creatively and cultivated the importance of an artist’s identity/branding. My artistic name used to be illusionartsy and within time has been Phunk Theory and Phunkreature. The manifesto where my experiences, thoughts/ideas, emotions/feelings, mental state transmit through my creations. Create discomfort and provoke a strong reaction to spectators for them to experience my manifesto. My artistic time consists in me drawing/painting during the nighttime, listening to music at full blast, in my world losing track of time. I find such fascination/ inspiration in animated movies: Coraline, Nightmare before Xmas, Corpse Bride, Paranorman, Alice in Wonderland, within dark art/horror, German expressionism, art books, etc. Within time, many opportunities have manifested: showcasing at art events/coffee shop galleries, participating in silent auctions, or having potential clients. I have to say another important tool as an artist is getting to engage and network with others, share ideas and talk about art.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My artistic journey in learning has always been smooth. I like comparing my evolution of how my artwork has changed through the years. I always carry a sketchbook with me and try to draw/doodle something every day. However, speaking for my artwork, ever since the pandemic, my work became stronger and more consistent with style. I think a struggle for me is getting to draw something I have in mind and not being able to draw it how I want it to look like; I find that frustrating.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My best work has to be a series of paintings I did when the pandemic started. A series called “Nido de la creación”, inspired by German expressionist movement during World War II. This series focuses on capturing moments and re-living history within emotions, losing a loved one, uncertainty, distortion of images, and control. Most of my artwork consists of either digital art or mixed media (acrylics/watercolor, charcoal, soft pastel/oil pastel/ or ink brush/pen). My best work is best known for high detail and usage of contrast with vibrant colors.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
My favorite childhood memory was having my childhood best friends as my next-door neighbors. I’ll never forgot when we used to play dress up, do our makeup for “runway shows,” or make “dance choreographies” to compete against each other and have our moms as judges, it was so painful having glitter inside my eyes.
