Conversations with Marissa Saucedo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Saucedo.

Hi Marissa, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Sifted and Sugared was always just an idea. It’s always been a dream of mine to do and create something I love every day. One day, I just decided to do it. I quit my full-time job and went out to buy everything I needed to start on my own. I was 19, still living at home, so what did I have to lose? Now here we are, creating something so special for so many different people. It’s truly amazing, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
A year ago today, I wouldn’t have thought that I’d have grown so much support from everyone around me, and I’m so grateful for the community I’ve created. Staying positive and pushing through, even when orders/customers are low was really challenging for me and still is, but it’s definitely worth it.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Most would categorize me as a baker, whereas I categorize myself more as an artist. I decorate custom sugar cookies for special events or any occasion using royal icing. I never realized the impact it would have on others, seeing their ideas be created into something special. Something that sets me apart from others is the time and dedication put into my work. I think it really shows when I take time to create those little details that make it so special.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Patience is definitely a quality that is important in being a decorator. Whether it’s for the long process of emailing, baking, decorating, and packaging, to getting through your slow seasons and being patient on what’s to come.
