Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Abbruzzese.
Mark, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Our band MindFree began in December 2018, when a school friend of mine, since kindergarten, Keith Walsh, and I started to write music together. Both of us had individually been in numerous bands, playing throughout SoCal, particularly Hollywood clubs, The Troubadour, The Whiskey, The Roxy, The Viper Room, and others.
We recorded and released our debut album MindFree, MindFree in 2021, and have been playing SoCal clubs/bars continuously since May 2021 to the present. We are currently getting ready to go back on the studio to record our second album as MindFree. We’ve also made a few videos: live, animated, and documentary.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the struggles for independent original music bands is finding clubs/bars/venues open to original music. The club scene in most cities in the USA caters to tribute bands, cover-bands, and National acts. So we are always on the lookout for SoCal clubs/bars/venues open to booking independent original music.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
MindFree is an eclectic mix of music genres, from Motown to prog, metal, punk, pop, and rock. Our music is very broad and somewhat non-genre as it crosses many boundaries.
Additionally, our focus is always on the song first and its mood/s. However, we pride ourselves on our musicianship regarding our instruments, so we each and together produce flourishes and complexity appropriate for the song. Finally, our music is a sincere peak into the human condition, in its lyrics, melodies, and chord structure. We are unique, we are MindFree.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
San Diego has an amazing location, ocean, mountains, etc. Multicultural dining and experiences. However, more music venues for independent original music would be awesome, for artists to express themselves.
