Conversations with Mark Villavicencio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Villavicencio.

Hi Mark, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Mark Villavicencio – Photographer

My name is Mark Villavicencio, and my journey into photography began in high school when I received a point-and-shoot camera as a Christmas gift during my junior year. After capturing a portrait of my youngest sister, I was immediately captivated by the result, which was equally appreciated by my parents. This initial experience sparked my passion for photography, and I continued experimenting with the point-and-shoot camera until I saved enough to upgrade to a DSLR.

The transition to a manual camera system was a significant learning curve—at first, I thought the camera was malfunctioning, as I was accustomed to the simplicity of automatic settings. However, this was the beginning of my path toward becoming a professional photographer.

Initially, I focused on family portraits, and over time, my work evolved to include senior portraits for high school graduates. In 2018, I relocated to Tampa, Florida, where I began photographing notable fitness influencers such as Rudy Mawer, Brendan Meyers, and others. This experience greatly expanded my network and visibility, leading to opportunities in runway shows, event photography, and product shoots for brands like RadioShack.

By 2020, I shifted my focus to my true passion—editorial and fashion photography. I was drawn to the creative potential of styling bold outfits, designing captivating settings, and producing dramatic, high-impact imagery. The freedom to craft visual stories has been both fulfilling and inspiring.

Currently, I work part-time in the San Diego and Los Angeles areas, specializing in portraits and portfolio shoots for local models. I also enjoy organizing collaborative events for photographers and models, fostering a creative environment where artists can come together to share ideas and produce compelling work. I believe in embracing the diversity of artistic expressions and enjoy celebrating the craft of others while continually pushing my own boundaries.

In an industry that can sometimes feel exclusive, I am committed to living by my own standards and supporting fellow artists. We are all creators, and each of us brings something unique to the table.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not always been easy. There are many hurdles that one must overcome almost like a “right of passage”

1) gate keeping: The photography and modeling industry can be very exclusive and pretentious at times. It is important to be confident that no matter what anyone thinks of your work, their opinion is not the final opinion. March to the beat of your own drum and not the society constructs.

2) difficult clients: Occasionally, you will work with a very difficult clientele and that is where being consistent in your product and policies is key. You want to be as transparent as possible and absolutely have a contract to legally protect you from any frivolous legal issues. I have often worked with models that would not let me use any of the photos I took which I took much time and effort into creating. This can easily be resolved by mandatory contracts.

3) getting started: Unfortunately, as a photographer you will have to do some freebies if it means a good investment for your brand. I would limit myself to how many I do, but make sure it brings you more business.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I hold down a regular 9-5 so I pride myself that my photography is my therapy and my passion from the regular 9-5. I fortunate have a stable regular job so that I can invest more into the craft of photography. I have been able to stylize and create elaborate photoshoots with elaborate costumes and clothing. I love the shock value that my photos can bring.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
