Today, we’d like to introduce you to Mauricio Navarro.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started studying film theory in Michigan in 2003; in 2004, I moved to Chile and studied 16mm film class. I started learning filmmaking and production. In 2006, I produced and directed my first short film, “Te Cuido,” which won best short film at the Festival de Cine de las Ideas in Santiago, Chile.
After a few years, I took various film classes and workshops and started working in Television in Chile as a Camera assistant; in 2010, I took a graduate in post-production and started my work as an editor in TV and Film. In 2013, I moved to San Diego and began producing a holistic show on KNSJ radio; I started my freelance videography, and since then, I’ve been working independently around San Diego.
In 2022, I started working with Tony Amat, a producer and photographer with whom I’ve been collaborating on several projects, including film festivals such as the Coronado Island Film Festival and San Diego Film Awards.
In 2023, I started working with David Kamatoy from Spark Studio Soundstage, and I am currently producing and directing a horror feature film called “In the Arms of Fire.” I am very excited about this production and working alongside the San Diego actors and crew.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
San Diego is a beautiful city but expensive. Films are very costly, and it has been a struggle to find producers and investors who can trust my skills. So, I’ve decided to focus on building clientele and subscribers on my YouTube channel. I enjoy making films immensely.
I have had to learn about business and marketing plans, target audiences, budgeting, copyrights, Sag Aftra contracts, film permits, press kits, networking, readings, revisions, percentages of ownership, distribution deals, etc. There is such an immense amount of details preparing for a feature film, it has been a long learning experience.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a musician. I speak both English and Spanish. I love scouting around San Diego for locations. I also do 3D work and visual arts.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I like how versatile this city can be, from beautiful beaches throughout the coast and dry arid desert scenes, as well as country and lakes, it has been a beautiful place to make films. I dislike traffic sometimes, but who doesn’t lol.
