Conversations with Max Gilbert

Today we’d like to introduce you to Max Gilbert

Max , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
For over three years, I worked in the mortgage industry, but I was ready to explore something new and dynamic. Brad, the owner of San Diego City Homes, was managing a full load—property management, fix-and-flip projects, and renovations—and realized he could use some help. He brought me on board, not only to lighten his responsibilities but also to mentor me along the way. I’ve gradually taken over his property management portfolio, gaining hands-on experience as a realtor and learning the ins and outs of house flipping. With Brad being both a licensed broker and contractor, I couldn’t ask for a better mentor, and my goal is to eventually build and run my own successful operation.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In real estate, there’s rarely a smooth road. Property management, for example, puts you right between the owner and tenant. If a property stays vacant too long, the owner’s concerned; if a repair is delayed, the tenant’s frustrated. Staying on top of maintenance and communicating clearly with everyone involved is essential. On the flipping side, there are times when a renovated property doesn’t sell right away, so patience becomes key. We often need to wait for the right buyer, all while covering monthly costs—and sometimes, we can’t even start the next project until the last one sells.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I work in real estate, specializing in property management and house flipping under the mentorship of Brad, the owner of San Diego City Homes. My role involves managing rental properties—acting as the bridge between owners and tenants—and handling the renovation and sale of investment properties. In property management, I focus on clear communication and proactive maintenance, ensuring both owners and tenants feel supported. In house flipping, I help with the transformation of properties, working toward finding the perfect buyer while balancing project timelines and budgets.

A lot of people are getting into house flipping, but our team truly sets us apart. With a highly experienced group, we complete projects efficiently and to the highest standard. Our designs also stand out, drawing countless compliments and giving our properties a unique appeal that makes a lasting impression.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I believe adaptability is the most crucial quality for success in real estate. Every day presents new challenges—whether it’s navigating unexpected issues in property management, adjusting to market changes, or finding creative solutions to sell a property. Being able to pivot quickly and learn from each situation helps me keep projects on track and build strong relationships with clients and tenants. This flexibility, combined with a commitment to high-quality work, has been key to our growth in the industry.
