Conversations with May Riddle

Today we’d like to introduce you to May Riddle

Hi May, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My cake journey, Bella Bells Cakes, all started during Covid. Baking has always been a passion of mine, I am a self taught baker. When the pandemic happened, I just knew I needed to be productive. I started baking bundt cakes, bread pudding, banana bread for family and friends to stay busy. Shortly after, they started ordering my baked goods. Early 2021, I decided to make it a business. After making it official, I expanded to making custom cakes, cupcakes and French macarons.

I am thankful to the Lord for blessing me with my artistic side. My creativity plays a big role in delivering what my customers want in their cakes, etc.

I am also thankful for my family and for new and old friends for supporting my business. I am where I am today because they believed in me.

My business is named after my daughter Bella ♥️

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road haha. I have a love hate relationship with French macarons. They’re so finicky that I had a hard time learning to make them. At first they came out cracked or hollow, so I changed my silicone mats and pans, tried different recipes, but i realized, it’s really how you mix it during the macaronage process. Thankfully, I now got it down to a science. It’s one of my favorite things to bake ♥️

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Before my business, I was in banking for many years. I love being around people, talking to clients, being around coworkers, etc.

When I started my business, I didn’t think I would like working alone, fortunately, I love it. Haha. I bake when I can and take orders on days that I am not busy. Sometimes, I overbook myself but I’m proud to say that I have never missed a scheduled pick up or delivery. Being a business owner has its own perks. I own my time so I take time off for self care when needed and go on vacation when time permits.

I specialize in buttercream cakes. My customers always say they love that my cakes are moist and aren’t so sweet. I personally do not like too sweet cakes , so I have developed a recipe that isn’t too sweet, but just the right amount of sweetness.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My husband Mike and my daughter Bella are my biggest cheerleaders. They have been very supportive, understanding and patient when my schedule is full and we’re not able to go on trips or can’t do weekend activities. My weekends are always packed as that’s when people usually celebrate birthdays and other events. Also my family and friends are great supporters. They push me to be the best that I can be in this field.
