Today we’d like to introduce you to Meg West.
Hi Meg, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Before I became a mother and hairstylist, I sang in a rock band. Spent my 20’s touring all over, writing songs, and performing on stage in a different city every night. Shortly after we were signed and our first real album was released in stores nationwide, I was diagnosed with late-stage thyroid cancer that had spread through my lymph nodes. 12 malignant tumors were found, and I was told I was inoperable, but I found a surgeon who would operate on me at UCLA. After an 8-hour operation and a couple rounds of radioactive iodine, I was in remission and have luckily stayed that way for 10 years this December. I was told I would never have children, that the treatments would destroy my eggs, but just one year after being declared cancer free, I found out I was carrying my little miracle. My son Parker is now 8 years old, and after I had him, I knew I wanted to give him the best life possible. I always loved doing hair, I worked at a beauty supply many many years ago and would do my hair as well as friends decades before actually going to cosmetology school. I knew I wanted to do it for real, that touring was no longer an option, and I was excited to start a new career where I can still express myself through art. I went to Paul Mitchell at 30 years old and started over. I even won a scholarship that I set my sights on. My favorite part of being a songwriter was when people would tell me my music helped them get through a hard time, and now I still get to do that through hair. When one of my clients is going through something, they sit in my chair, cry, vent, and then they get to leave feeling beautiful and heard. I found the perfect outlet to channel my gifts and creativity. Now I own my own business, make my own schedule, and get to raise my son on the beach in the best city in America (well in my opinion it is!). Last year I was nominated for an award at the world’s largest hairstylist awards show, and I’m so thankful I took that leap 8 years ago starting over, as scary as it was, it was the best thing I ever did for myself, and my son.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
So many! Leaving a bad marriage, leaving my hometown for a new city where I knew nobody, cancer, my father passing this year, life hasn’t been the easiest, but I made it!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
A hairstylist who specializes in extensions, blonding, vivid and fashion colors, especially rainbow hair. I am also known on TikTok/Instagram for my transformations and funny videos.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
The weather, the beach, the food, entertainment, everything! After being born and raised in Las Vegas I always said if I ever had kids, I would raise them on the beach, and here we are. There is always something to do, beautiful outdoor experiences, it’s the best city! I wouldn’t mind cheaper housing though if I HAD to complain about something haha, but it’s worth it to live in paradise!
