Conversations with Melissa Rocha

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Rocha

Hi Melissa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my love for dance in middle school. I took ballet, tap, and jazz classes all throughout, and in high school I focused on ballet folklorico. I continued my love for dance in college by taking ballet and jazz classes. I’ve always had a dream to open my own studio and teach kids everything I’ve learned! Years passed and I decided to just go for it! I started asking studios around if I could rent their space and I ended up at the place I am now. I started teaching ballet, and I’ve expanded to hiring dance teachers to offer hip hop and jazz classes. I’m also in the works to adding a new ballet point class. Dance was always an escape from the real world and moving my body just brings me happiness. Thats the kind of feeling I want my students to feel. It is such a wonderful feeling to be able to do what I love and have the chance to be creative in my own way!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest struggle for me, was myself. I had been dreaming about teaching dance for a very long time, but sometimes I felt like I wasn’t good enough to teach. I would make excuses for myself, like saying it wasn’t a good time to start, but eventually I thought to myself “if it’s not now, then when?” So I went for it, and I am so happy I did!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
One of my passions is working with kids. It brings me joy and it makes me feel like I’m making a difference in the world. I ventured on a new journey of working with children with special needs and I ended up loving it! I have brought both of my passions together, working with kids and dance!

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The biggest lesson I have learned is to believe in yourself! If you don’t do it for yourself, no one else will. I’ve also learned that its important to take initiative, but also rely on the people that show you genuine support.
