Today we’d like to introduce you to Melody Liu.
Hi Melody, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I actually started my career in tech—working in software product management for almost 10 years. It was a great job in many ways: it challenged me, helped me grow professionally, and even gave me the chance to travel the world. But deep down, I knew it wasn’t my true calling. I’ve always been a creative person at heart. I love making things with my hands, doing arts and crafts, and I’ve always been drawn to the magic and beauty of the natural world. Eventually, I decided to be brave, trust my gut, and take the leap into something that felt more meaningful.
That leap led me to flowers—and I instantly fell in love. I started working at a local flower shop on Pacific Coast Highway (with the most incredible ocean view!) and found the peace and joy I’d been craving. From there, I dove into the world of event florals, freelancing with different designers and soaking up everything I could. I was in full flower immersion from morning to night, and eventually, I took everything I’d learned and launched my own floral business.
A few years ago, I moved to Hawaii, and now I have the joy of creating floral magic in both Oahu and Southern California. I travel back and forth often and feel so lucky to work in two absolutely stunning places that inspire me every single day.
These days, I truly feel like I’m doing what I’m meant to do—bringing beauty, joy, and a little bit of magic into the world through flowers.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting a whole new career from scratch was scary and a little overwhelming at first. My entire world shifted—new environment, new pace, new people, new everything. I took a big leap, knowing I’d be walking away from a steady paycheck and stepping into a field I had zero experience in. There was no playbook, no one way or right way to pursue my new life as a florist, so I really just had to figure it out on my own. It was a huge risk, and it took some adjusting to, for sure.
But I also saw it as an adventure. The challenges were humbling and exciting in their own way. I leaned into having a beginner’s mindset, which has really helped me face roadblocks with curiosity instead of fear. Every unknown has become an opportunity to learn, grow, and level up—and over time, that’s helped me build so much confidence in myself and what I’m capable of.
These days, the struggles I face are more like growing pains. My business is maturing, and the “problems” I have now are actually good signs—things like figuring out how to scale, manage my time, build a team, and develop my voice as an artist. It’s a whole new kind of challenge, but I welcome it, because it means I’m moving forward!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My business is called Flower Bunny, inspired by my little white bunny who’s been my constant companion for almost 15 years—she’s the original, adorable muse! Flower Bunny specializes in artful floral design and installations for weddings, events, editorials, and brand activations.
My style is whimsical, playful, and imaginative—like stepping into a floral daydream. I love working with bright colors and textural elements to create florals that feel both elevated and full of joy. The goal is always to bring a little magic to the everyday and tell a unique story through each design.
What sets Flower Bunny apart is the heart behind the work. I collaborate closely with my clients to create personalized floral experiences that are beautiful, meaningful, and unforgettable. Flowers are ephemeral—and that’s what makes them so powerful. Every bloom is a chance to be present, celebrate beauty, and create something truly special.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
As a kid, my dream was actually to become a fashion designer! I’d perform “t-shirt surgery” and cut up old clothes and transform them into new ones, plead my mom to take me to the fabric district in downtown LA, and come up with the quirkiest, neon, lace-trimmed, polk-a-dotted outfits I could dream up—then proudly wear them to school to show my friends.
Some of my favorite childhood memories include jumping out of bed at midnight after dreaming up a new idea for a dress, sketching it, and staying up all night with my sewing machine to bring it to life. These were some of my first experiences of true creative “flow” where time disappears and you’re just totally in the zone.
I try to channel that same playful, judgment-free joy in my floral work today. When I remember to create like that little kid who just loved making stuff, that’s when the real authentic magic shows up.
