Conversations with Mia Counts Lynch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia Counts Lynch.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I always wanted to be an author and write novels. I love reading, and read any book I could get my hands on growing up. My favorite were historical fiction, but I struggled to find any books that had Latin American or Spanish characters – particularly nuanced, well-developed ones. As a Mexican American, I wanted to read about characters with backgrounds I related to, so I decided to write about them myself.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Writing is a hugely personal activity. Every book contains a part of you, and letting anybody else read something you’ve written is a nerve-wracking experience. The purpose of publishing novels is to have other people read them, but I am always so worried to hear what people think! The publishing industry is also filled with rejection. Rejection is a natural part of the process, but you have to remember that your audience is out there. Not every person will like your book, and that has nothing to do with you. It just means they are not your audience.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an author, specializing in historical romance. My first book, Sins of the Father, came out in 2021, and I am currently working on the next one. I am so proud that I get to write the type of books that I love to read, and that they are the books I wished I could find while growing up. There have been more and more Latina/x authors writing about Latina/x characters, and I am so honored to be part of that movement.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I observed more than I spoke, I read too much (although, is there such a thing?), and knit matching hats for my American Girl doll Josefina and me. I became interested in history at a young age after listening to family stories and loved watching Old Hollywood movies. My family spent a lot of time outdoors hiking and snorkeling and taught me to really value our time together.
