Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia George.
Hi Mia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Thank you so much! I’m grateful for the opportunity to share more about my journey.
First and foremost, I am a Black African-American Woman residing in San Diego, CA with deep southern Mississippi roots. I am a mother to 3 beautiful daughters…a devoted daughter to my loving parents…a healer by nature and profession (Registered Nurse + Registered Public Health Nurse)…and a Soul Sister to many.
My passion for healing (mind, body, and soul) and curating experiences that provide healing, safety, growth, acceptance, love, and joy is where my life purpose lies.
I had to navigate one of the most heartbreaking times in my entire life in 2019.
That pain permeated every fiber of my being and every corner of my life for that entire year…and even seeped into my 2020 as I also navigated the global pandemic, political atrocities, and endless trauma-inducing police brutality videos that surfaced on social + mainstream media daily.
My survival and my ability to thrive in the face of all of that pain, heartache, and trauma is credited to my God-given inner strength AND the safe spaces I found in others and created for others.
Being transparent…being vulnerable…being open to receive help, guidance, love, and support…trusting the healing process…trusting myself…believing in my community’s greatness and power is where the magic happened and continues to happen.
As I navigated my pain and healing, I learned that my experiences and traumas were very personal for me, but sadly not unique.
I learned that my yearning for deep-rooted healing and connection with others in the Black community wasn’t isolated or far-fetched…but real, shared, and necessary.
I learned that my voice, my wisdom, my survival skills, my unique love, and inner light were not only appreciated but impactful.
As more and more people from my community came to me hoping to find a safe space…to feel seen, heard, honored, and lovingly guided…I realized that my dream to create these spaces was slowly…in its own divine way…coming to fruition.
As an advocate for Black healing and wellness, I officially created and officially launched CURATED…for the CULTURE! in November 2021, curating experiences that center the healing, hope, joy, and empowerment of Black Men and Black Women in San Diego, CA.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has not been smooth…but rarely is the purpose-driven journey.
It has, however, been impactful for so many and has changed the trajectory of my life.
Being new to entrepreneurship, I am learning the ins and outs of business…while simultaneously running my business. And that’s no easy feat.
As I navigate this uncharted journey, I also strive to remain present for and accountable to myself and my family.
Imposter syndrome is REAL.
Affirming and reaffirming myself is a daily practice.
I’ve learned that trusting my Tribe to love, encourage, support, and inspire me is an act of self-love, self-care, and self-preservation.
I’ve accepted that the process of learning, unlearning, relearning, healing, growing, and evolving will be never-ending. Therefore, grace for self and grace for the journey is vital.
Balancing the 24/7 responsibilities of my household, children, Healthcare career, and this new budding passion…on my own…seems virtually impossible most days. But I’m doing it.
I have faith that the long days and sleepless nights are only temporary…soon all of this sacrifice will make sense…and it will all be worth it in the end.
And so far…even on the really hard days, when I feel like I’ve failed in every way…I still know in my heart that I’m on the right path, I’m doing what I’ve been called to do, and I’m proud of myself for being brave enough to even try.
I’m trusting the process…fully.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
With systemic racism at the foundation of the lived experience for African Americans in the U.S., economic disparity, social inequality, and continual exposure to trauma has become the normalcy of our existence.
Deep-rooted pain requires deep-rooted healing.
Healing in the Black community isn’t linear in function nor presentation…a delicious soul food meal, a live music set, a paint party, a haircut at a local barbershop, a laughter-filled comedy night, a 3-on-3 basketball game, shopping with black-owned businesses, an art show, an open-dialogue, a protest, a prayer, a poem, a hug, a cry, an affirmation…can ALL generate healing and strengthen us and our community.
CURATED…for the CULTURE! amplifies the already beautiful, powerful, and healing spirit of the African American collective….in a variety of relatable, impactful, and community-building curated spaces and experiences.
No CURATED event or space is the same! Each experience is unique, but the vibes felt will always be familiar, uplifting, authentic, and healing.
Whether we’re eating, laughing, expressing, creating, dancing, sharing, supporting, learning, or anything in between… after experiencing a CURATED event, members of the Black community will feel seen, heard, honored, empowered to heal, encouraged to remain hopeful, and inspired to create and share happiness with others.
Each CURATED event features Black-Owned products, businesses, and/or services as a way to further highlight Black excellence and strengthen and support our community.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me is: fulling your divine purpose while honoring your passions and dreams and maintaining a healthy life balance.
