Conversations with Micah Heard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Micah Heard.

Micah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started playing drums at around the age of 3yrs. I grew up playing in my families church where most of my skills/talent developed. When I got to middle school I learned how to read and broaden my understanding for music. My band director (Mr Gregory Martin) made sure I knew how to read, he would bring me to the band room after I was done with homework after school and we’d be in the room practicing and reading until my mom came to pick me up. Also at that time Mr.Martin introduce me to another key figure in my life/music life. His name is Mr. Fernando Pullum and he helped me grow as a professional musician, he put me in rooms I really had no business being in but because god placed him in my life I got to experience things that a lot of people haven’t been able to. So by me playing in church with my family who are also musicians and then doing gigs Mr. Pullum would give me, I got to meet a lot of vital people. Someone else who became a very important mentor to me was Rickey Minor. He allowed me to shadow him and see how some of the things in the industry work first hand. He also placed me in rooms I had no business being in, but him and his band made me feel like I belonged. And of course there are a lot of people and things that I am leaving out because if I didn’t you would be reading this for the next 3 days. But what you need to know is that my journey/story is still at the beginning and where I am today is only possible because of the people that believed in me, especially my family my late great grandmother
(Barbra Collins) was one of the first to push for me as well as my late grandmother Beverly Ann Heard. You know your village is only as strong as the people that’s in it and I’m glad to have some pretty strong people from mentors, to friends, and to my family in my village. They help me push this dream up the mountain and not just that they encourage me to keep going and not to give up and to look at the glass half full. Matter of fact as an example me and one of my Best friends (Veritus Miller) cofounded and co-produce a music festival that’s been happening annually for 3yrs now called the Potluck. And that was only attainable and worthwhile because we knew who was in our village. So where I am today is not just about what I did but also what my village did to help me get there. And I’m still learning and growing, but I’m proud to now be a touring musician, a drum teacher, a child of god, a coproducer/co-founder of a music fest, and so much more.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
So far in my journey there’s been ups and downs, but I’ve always found a away to persevere. At a certain point in my journey life got rough and I wasn’t in the right head space mentally or emotionally which caused me to kind of back away from music and regain myself.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a musician from Los Angeles CA, I primarily play drums but I also play bass guitar as well as write and compose music. Something that I am extremely proud of is my original music. At the moment my songs are unreleased but I am proud of the process, I’m proud to now say that I have something of my own that I created. I feel that the one thing that sets me apart is my personality. Just who I am as a person I like to treat others how I would want to be treated so most times I have a smile on my face and it doesn’t have to be for me but because someone else might need that smile.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I would say I’m a risk taker. The way I see it is, in this industry you have to take risks on yourself and you have to fully trust in god. And for people my age trusting god is very hard but for me it makes me optimistic it makes me look at the bright side of things.
