Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Salazar-Curiel.
Hi Michelle, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hi, I’m Michelle—most people call me Mich—a bubbly, creative soul raised in Tijuana, Mexico, and now proudly based in sunny San Diego. My love for color, design, and organizing beautiful chaos has been with me for as long as I can remember. Whether it was decorating my notebooks as a kid or spending hours curating the perfect aesthetic for my designs, I’ve always been drawn to all things visual and vibrant.
That lifelong passion led me to earn a degree in Interior Design, where I was introduced to the world of graphic and digital design—and it was love at first click. From that moment on, I knew I had found the perfect way to merge creativity, storytelling, and structure.
My professional journey began as a CAD drafter, where I brought residential floor plans to life through technical drawings and 3D visualizations. But everything changed when I joined the Facilities and Workplace Services team in my previous position. For over six years, I worked in an environment where creativity met function—designing everything from presentations and logos to marketing materials and internal campaigns. It gave me a deeper appreciation for how design can spark connection and elevate everyday experiences.
Mich Creations was born out of a personal need. I couldn’t find a planner that had everything I wanted—so I made my own. When friends started asking where they could buy one, I realized this wasn’t just a one-time project… it was the start of something bigger. That’s when I leaned into my passion and launched a brand that combines custom visuals, personalized event goodies, and branding that reflects who my clients truly are.
People often tell me I have a bright, contagious energy—like a little spark that makes them laugh, feel lighter, and genuinely seen. That joy and warmth are things I carry into every project. Whether it’s a custom favor for a celebration or branding for a small business, I infuse each design with personality, care, and a little bit of magic.
Today, I help clients bring their ideas to life—whether that’s a logo that captures their brand essence, a personalized wedding favor box, or a seamless pattern for their product line. My work is fueled by kindness, collaboration, and the belief that design should be both beautiful and functional. I’m on a mission to grow Mich Creations into my dream full-time business—one where I help others achieve their vision while staying true to mine.
When I’m not designing, you’ll probably catch me dancing, singing, playing mahjong tiles or Rummikub, exploring coffee shops, binge-watching Netflix, riding ATVs, or planning my next getaway—with my sticker-filled planner and an iced beverage by my side. My motto? You design your life. And I truly believe that—because every little detail, choice, and color adds up to something magical.
Here’s to continued growth and making beautiful, meaningful visions come true—with laughter, heart, and plenty of sparkle along the way.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all—it’s been full of twists, bumps, and a lot of growth. There’s honestly so much I could say, but overall, my journey has included many moments of feeling out of place or unsure of myself. One of the biggest challenges was when I moved to the U.S. to start college. The culture felt completely different, and I wasn’t fluent in English yet, which really affected my confidence. I often felt like I had to work twice as hard just to keep up, and that weighed on me.
I’ve faced my fair share of growing pains—moments of self-doubt, imposter syndrome, and learning how to navigate the creative world while staying true to myself. But each of those struggles shaped me into the person I am today: more resilient, more grounded, and more certain of what I bring to the table. I had to push through limiting beliefs, comparison traps, and a lot of “shoulds” to get to a place where I now lead with heart, humor, and authenticity. The road hasn’t been easy, but it’s made me stronger—and way more empathetic toward others chasing their own dreams.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a multi-passionate designer who creates custom visuals that bring people’s ideas to life—whether that’s a full website, a party invitation, a logo, or a personalized wedding favor box. Over the years, I’ve designed everything from flyers, menus, and business cards to branded planners, stickers, and seamless patterns. If it can be designed, I’m in!
One of the things I’m most proud of is how intuitive I’ve become at understanding people’s vision. Clients often tell me, “You got exactly what I was thinking—even better than I imagined!” I think that comes from really listening, asking the right questions, and combining strategy with creativity.
I’m also known for working fast. Once I get the idea, it just flows. I don’t overcomplicate the process—I make it feel easy and fun. And when you work with me, you’re not just hiring a designer, you’re getting a creative partner who truly cares.
What sets me apart is my energy. I bring a spark, a sense of humor, and a lightness to my work that helps people feel comfortable and excited. My clients don’t just get beautiful, custom designs—they walk away feeling seen, understood, and lifted. I bring heart, humor, and high vibes to every design—because that’s just how I’m wired.
How do you think about luck?
I wouldn’t say luck has played a major role in my life or business. I genuinely believe that everything I’ve achieved has come from hard work, resilience, and a deep commitment to growth. From navigating new environments and challenges to building my business from the ground up, it’s been a journey of showing up, learning, and pushing through. I’ve created the life I have through intention and heart—not by chance. And while I’m always grateful for the opportunities that come my way, I know it’s the effort I put in every day that truly shapes the results.
