Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike (Mikayla) Haynes-Pitts (Marques).
Hi Mike (Mikayla), so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always been a fan of writing. When I was quite young, I often took creative writing to write little short stories. Furthermore, I also taught writing in the humanities classes I taught as well. While these all influenced my writing, the pandemic finally gave me the time to write. At first, I wrote short stories and sent them out to friends. Eventually, they suggested I put it into a book and I did. One of the aspects of my writing, that always stood out was my inclusivity. As I am a Black, genderfluid, queer, polyamorous person there were several unique aspects I wanted to see in my writing. Lastly, I wanted these diverse characters in a sci-fi setting as it has always been my personal favorite genre thanks to growing up with my dad’s heavy sci-fi interests. As such, I have written now five books with a sixth and a comic on the way! I truly love doing this and putting in diverse characters like myself and my wonderful partners.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not always, unemployment, job switches and rising costs of materials since the pandemic have not made it easy. Also, there are some conventions and others I don’t do as well on. I think another aspect that has been tough to struggle through is that many people don’t tell me their thoughts on the books. They don’t even tell if they hate it. This has made it difficult to know what if anything people enjoy about my writing.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Currently, I’m an author and at times I use my film degree to work with inclusive and creative film work. I specialize mostly though in writing and creating character concepts for characters. For example, several of the characters in the books have stickers, prints and keychains of their art created by various Black artists. I’m most proud of having books that include Black LGBTQ+ characters in compelling settings, plots and genres. I also think this is what sets me in apart as adhere to diversity.
Any big plans?
Right now I hope to finish up book 6 with my editor, Erika Hardison & cover artist Atagun Ilhan. Furthermore, I always want to complete my comic with artist Sebastian Torres & letter, Jess Havok, for my Surge Series. I have ideas for book 7 and 8, and perhaps new comics as well. Beyond that it’s hopefully finding a sustainable job, continuing to travel and enjoy more time with my partners Jayde McDougle and Kris Powell (as seen in one of my photos!).
