Conversations with Mila Fox

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mila Fox.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Absolutely! Thanks so much for taking the time to learn a bit more about me. My name is Mila Fox and I am an actor, model, and content creator. I just graduated with a BFA and was a cross-enrolled student at Rhode Island School of Design and Brown University studying Photography and Theater Arts & Performance Studies.

I first began my journey in entertainment in the fourth grade where I joined Young Singers of Orange County and immersed myself in as many school productions as I could. I then went on to audition for Orange County School of the Arts and was thrilled to be 1/50 students to be accepted into their Musical Theater Department. I still reminisce and laugh about my audition because I remember being so nervous yet so excited at the same time.

I remember doing a comedic monologue where I played a student who rushes to wake her father up at 4 in the morning because she forgot that she had a science project due and hadn’t even started!

The audition was held in a large, daunting classroom that later became the location of my Sophomore Year Spanish class and there was only a table that separated myself and the department judges. I didn’t know much about “blocking” then, so when I progressed to shake my “dad” awake, I knelt all the way down to the floor and the judges couldn’t see me so they had to get out of their chairs and bend down too! I got a bit flustered in the moment but used that energy to further my performance. I laugh about it now because it’s quite funny! Lesson learned.

Anyways, after studying in a conservatory for six years, I then went on to study Photography + Interdisciplinary Arts at Rhode Island School of Design and Theater at Brown. I met some of the most incredible professors and acquired knowledge that I will carry with me throughout my life. It’s amazing how much you can learn both in and out of the classroom. I learned things at RISD that I could apply to my performative practice and vice versa.

As of June 4th, ‘22 I am officially a college graduate and am pursuing acting & modeling full-time. On days that I am not on set and/or auditioning, I am collaborating with my favorite brands and creating artistic content that speaks to my aesthetic and mission. Though, one thing I have learned post-grad is that I have to keep chasing knowledge and enforcing practice in order to keep growing. With that, in about a month and a half, I am headed to London to further my training as a performer!

And… after that… My goal is for you to start seeing me on TV screens and movie theaters near you. Stay tuned! 😉

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Oh, it’s definitely had its ups and downs. They say life gives you challenges that push you to grow and one of my biggest obstacles was stage fright. And not the subtle kind… I’m talking shallow breathing, body shakes, profuse sweating, and vocal inconsistencies. Just a big ol’ combination of everything an actor/singer doesn’t need to happen. I would spend nights in my room crying because I felt like my career was over before it even truly began.

It wasn’t until college that I came to understand and acknowledge the ways in which I am responsible for the outcome of my life. I spent too much of my youth trying to control the way others perceived me and let the negative opinions in others’ minds become truth in my own.

I’ve always dreamt of making a large impact through the work that I do both on and off the stage and desire to be a voice that inspires. Authenticity and embracing “the good and the bad and the ugly” is what I believe inspires hope. Life presents its challenges to everyone in different ways, and I want to inspire strength in others instead of unrealistic perfectionism.

Anyways! Yes, life has presented struggles that, at times, have felt completely impossible to overcome, but one of the strongest remedies is a mix of determination, love, and hope. You have to believe in your power, and the rest will follow.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a film & tv actor, fashion model, and content creator! I’ve made appearances on TV shows from Disney all the way to Desperate Housewives! In addition, I’ve shot Print Ads, Short Films, and most recently a Commercial. I like to keep busy.

Now that I’m out of college, I am auditioning non-stop.

Some of my recent media partnerships are with Steve Madden, Express, Clinique (and more). Currently, I’m working on two collaborations with companies that I’ve adored my whole life, and I could not be more excited to share with you (soon :))!

One of the best things about what I do is that I get to meet new people all the time. As a kid, I always told my friends that my biggest goal in life was to meet every single person in the entire world. Every. Single. Person.

I am a people person at heart and am proud that I get to connect with people in unique ways. Safe to say, I am on the road to fulfilling my childhood dreams, and believe my passion and determination sets me apart.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Ooh, let me think! The first memory that comes to mind took place in the late 2000s. I was on a weekly trip to the Los Angeles Fashion District with my mom – i.e., the woman who influenced my passion for fashion. She had been shopping there since her 20s but I didn’t really become interested until my late childhood.

Anyways, we were walking down the streets and after a while, I noticed almost everyone knew my family by name. Each time a seller shouted “Hi Mila!” as I walked past them, I felt such warmth and excitement. I’d chat with shoppers about the beautiful designs + details of the clothing pieces I was adoring, but wouldn’t say a word before having the piece(s) right in my hand! You know, those scenes in movies where people passionately fight and tug for things at the mall? ESPECIALLY if it’s the last one? Yeah, well, that’s definitely based on true stories in LA’s Fashion District where shoppers are quick to swipe items you “eyed” right before your eyes in a mad dash to be the number one fashionista.

Truth be told, the Fashion District felt like an extension of home because of the people that inhabited it and their shared passion. They quickly became family. At the end of each Saturday Spree, we’d bid farewell by saying “see you next week!”

And we’d do it all again.

That’s one of the reasons why I love content creation so much! I love meeting new people and building a community who love sharing their passion(s) – whether it be about fashion, beauty, lifestyle, etc… I feel like that excited little eight-year-old girl all over again!

What a time we live in!
